What is the prognosis for small cell lung cancer mets to liver and bone?

I have been told that with the treatment of VP-16 and Carbamazepine, 2 years is the maximum life expectancy. However, after working in Oncology for 6 years, I found that though this cancer as well as any is devastating, the quality and longevity of life is mostly up to the patient and their outlook about life. God is in control of everything. Faith, surrounding the patient with positivity, and constant love and support can do amazing things. Who are we to put a time limit on someones life? Yes, I know that a large group of SCLC patients were placed in a group, given the treatment and watched to see who responded, lived and died. I get statistics. I just believe that all things can be done with Christ who gives us strength. So I say we stop asking how long we have, and live each day like it's our last, counting the blessings we have today and praying for tomorrow.

Yes! This type of lung cancer has been found on the lower (eighth) rib adjacent to the area of the lung (lower left lobe) that was removed by surgery after first diagnosed. A regimen of radiation (ten consecutive days) and several chemotherapy sessions with various chemicals did not seem to help. Although the cancer did not spread to other ribs.

How does lung cancer effect the cell cycle?

A change in the Cell cycle causes Lung cancer or any other cancer. lung cancer doesn't affect the cell cycle. In the interphase of the cell there are three phases G1, S and the G2 phase . generally the cells enter G0(g zero) phase if further division of cells is not needed. this is controlled by the cell cycle regulatory compounds(cyclins and kinases). If the cell doesn't enter the G0 phase, this causes continuous division of them and called a cancer. this is brought up by Carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

Can increased interstitial lung disease with reactive adenopathy and nodule to thyroid indicate cancer?

I have a history of breast cancer and last year on april 13th 2012, My silicone implants were removed due to rupture. the dr suctioned out as much as he could but my body had already absorb some of the silicone. Eversince, I have had increased respiratory distress with hospitilizations to ICU. Never has respiratory issues before this. now there say I have asthma. I have increased pain and lymphadema and my last ct scan showed increased interstitial lung disease with reactive adenopathy bilateral. enlarged hilar nodes bilateral more on right than left and a nodule on my thyoid. Could the silicone from my implants cause this or is my cancer coming back.

What explanations can you prepose to explain a large increase in smoking and in lung cancer over a same period?

One explanation may be that the smoking caused the lung cancer. It is also possible that smoking and lung cancer are statistically unrelated and that another carcinogen caused the lung cancer. A correlational study must be conducted to determine this.

What is the life expectancy of a 72 year old man with stage 4 lung cancer and only 20 percent of heart function?

A prudent man in such condition would not be making long-range plans. Like, say, dinner reservations for tomorrow night.

Basically, the fact that such a person is alive NOW is a minor miracle. His "life expectancy" is essentially zero.

What are the complications of pelvic radiotherapy?

Typical short term effects of pelvic radiotherapy:

Bladder - can cause increased frequency of urination, stinging when urinating, nocturia (needing to get up frequently during the night to urinate)

Bowels - can cause either diarrhoea or constipation, pruritis (anal irritation leading to itchiness)

Skin - possibly some reddening of the skin in treatment area (usually noticed in the natal cleft, where there is more friction between skin folds)

Nausea - infrequent for pelvic irradiation but is possible

Fatigue - levels of fatigue differ for each patient, some don't notice it whilst others can get very tired

These effects don't typically appear until about 10 days into treatment, and can usually be managed effectively. They are not permanent, and begin to subside about 10 days after the end of treatment.

Possible long term effects:

Erectile dysfunction can occur in some (not all) cases (specifically after prostate treatment)

Bladder constriction can occur, meaning the bladder can hold a lesser volume than it did prior to treatment - however this certainly does not occur in all cases. Steps are taken to minimise the chance of this occurring - it is one of the reasons patients are asked to keep their bladder fullness consistent for each daily treatment (this can be empty, moderate, or full, depending on the specific treatment).
