If the disc mounts it should be accessible to iTunes providing the music on the disc is in a format recognisable by iTunes. If the disc mounts but is not recognised you can double click the disc's icon and drag the music tracks from the disc directly into iTunes.

There are many reasons why your USB flash drive may be not recognised by your Mac, one of the following may apply;

- Incorrectly formatted flash drive

- Damaged flash module

- USB flash drive detection disabled on your account

Hardware is almost never damaged by hard shutdowns, do there's no worry there. However the software may be damaged. If everything is acting fine, then no worries. If there are still problems, however, you may need to reinstall or repair the filesystem or OS.

Frequent freezing, crashing, etc. may be sign of a hardware problem, usually unrelated to hard shutdowns. IE, you didn't cause it to fail, it was failing already and that's what caused it to freeze and require a hard shutdown in the first place.

With Excel on a Mac a line break is entered by adding the Command (cmd) key to the other two - cmd alt enter. The Command key may be replaced by the Control key (ctrl) in some versions of Excel - It's a Microsoft thing.
