What happened to Hary Houdini?
Harry Houdini died of peritonitis secondary to a ruptured appendix. It has been speculated that Houdini was killed accidentally by a McGill University student, J. Gordon Whitehead, who delivered multiple blows to Houdini's abdomen (with permission) while he was in Montreal. The eyewitnesses were students named Jacques Price and Sam Smilovitz (sometimes called Jack Price and Sam Smiley). Their accounts generally agreed. The following is Price's description of events: 'Houdini was reclining on his couch after his performance, having an art student sketch him. When Whitehead came in and asked if it was true that Houdini could take any blow to the stomach, Houdini replied groggily in the affirmative. In this instance, he was hit three times, before Houdini could tighten up his stomach muscles, to avoid serious injury. Whitehead reportedly continued hitting Houdini several times afterwards, and Houdini acted as though he were in some pain.' Houdini stated that if he had had time to prepare himself properly, he would have been in a better position to take the blows. Houdini had apparently been suffering from appendicitis for several days prior and yet refused medical treatment. His appendix would most likely have burst on its own without the trauma. Although in serious pain, Houdini none-the-less continued to travel, without seeking medical attention. When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 40°C degrees (104 F). Despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, Houdini took the stage. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital. Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. in Room 401 on October 31 (Halloween), 1926, at the age of 52. After taking statements from Price and Smilovitz, Houdini's insurance company concluded that the death was due to the dressing-room incident and paid double indemnity.

Why does Teller from Penn and Teller not talk?
Yes. Teller started his career in magic as a performing for college students, they were very boisterous and he found that by remaining silent himself they settled down. This became part of his routine and when he formed a duo with Penn they decided he should stick with it.
When he is off camera he is said to be very talkative but stays silent on television (even during interviews).
You know, just because he wears a cross around his neck doesn't mean he's Christian, just like putting a ring around my finger doesn't mean I'm married. Some people just do it for the looks. Also Catholic and Christian are not the same thing, you don't have to be Catholic to be a Christian.

What is a good name for a race of magicians and the shadow world in my story?
The magicians should be called sorcerians and the world called voltarnia.
Paganism, Witchcraft & magic are as old as mankind. Anything, beyond your understanding or comprehension can be considered magic. A cell phone to a primitive is magic.
When mankind first started being self aware, we looked beyond ourselves and needed answers to things like, where does the sun go at night? How do we insure it will come back? How do we heal wounds and illnesses? How do we find food?
Eventually members of the group who discovered things, like which plants helped an upset stomach, where to find water, what the migration patterns of the local animals were and other things, became the ones others turned to for answers. These were the Wise Ones...
The cycles of the seasons where in our blood and instincts, as they governed our survival. The wise ones were the ones who kept track of the right time to plant, and harvest, ensuring the continuance of the people.
As we became more evolved the amount of knowledge expanded, and those with the answers learned a few tricks of their own.
If someone tells you a certain herb will cure your cut, you may or may not believe them, if they are well respected and do a little spell/prayer over the cut at the same time as using the herb, you tend to believe... Particularly if it works... you then tell others of the "power" of the Wise One... Eventually a name gets made, and expectation are raised...
It is a commonly accepted fact that your mind has a strong influence on your body... If you believe in something it has a better chance of working. the Wise Ones figured this out early on, so a little "showmanship" helped their reputation...
As spell/prayers/magic/ became standardized and passed on from generation to generation, the words became of equal importance to the practical application...
Magic became accepted as something that worked...
Science is today what magic once was, a practical, evolving set of standard results from repeated experimentation...
Even modern medicine can't tell us everything the mind is capable of, so some of us still believe in and practice Magic...
Gerald Gardner originally started Wicca, but it is unknown who actually started magic. Some say that it was created by the Gods, and was descended upon the mortals for being faithful to the Gods. It is also said that on the seventh day that God was resting, that Satan created a witch and put him on Earth to wreak havoc.
But in other words, it is really unknown who originally started it.

Runes were used as an alphabet by the Norse (Vikings), the old Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, and the Anglo-Saxons of Britain. They also had magic uses, such as divination, and protective magic.

Is magic against Christianity?
"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord , and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you" (Deuteronomy 18:10-13).
"When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn" (Isaiah 8:19-20).
"All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone; here is no fire to sit by" (Isaiah 47:13-14).
"So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, 'You will not serve the king of Babylon.' They prophesy lies to you that will only serve to remove you far from your lands; I will banish you and you will perish" (Jeremiah 27:9-10).
"Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. … Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!" (Matthew 7:20-23).
"He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters" (Matthew 12:30).
"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21)
a big no noMAGIC SEPARATES US FROM GOD AND IT DISPLEASES HIM! The miracles in the Bible are clearly distinguished from "magic." For one example, see the story of Moses and the magicians of Pharaoh in Exodus chapter 7.Answer
Since the God who said that witchcraft and other magic practices were forbidden and HE is JESUS' DADDY, it is safe to assume that you are not to harlot yourselves with demonic spirits or their power regardless if you are a Jew or Christian. It depends on what kind of magic you are referring to. If it's parlor tricks, slight of hand, or illusion then there is nothing wrong with it. It is just entertainment. It isn't the acts of magic, it is the mind set behind the acts that really matters.
Answer
This is a rather controversial subject for many reasons. One is that there are no universally accepted definitions of magic. Another is that magic is typically an umbrella term used to classify multiple practices both light and dark such as necromancy, demonism, natural healing, alchemy, voo doo, blessings and others. The Bible never forbids against "magic" but uses words like "sorcery" and "witchcraft" which are two subclasses of magic, both of which are typically seen as coming from evil deities such as demons. One could argue that while these types maybe sinful, others such druidism and shamanism, which involve using the natural energy found in God's green Earth are not sinful. One must realize there are very few absolutes in Christianity and magic is no exception. Use your own logic and morals to come to a consensus, but do not expect a straight answer from anywhere because in truth there isn't one.
You must also realize that the Bible, and I loathe that I must say this, has been twisted and corrupted and changed because of translation, political and spiritual propaganda and agendas, and simple human error. What you read may be totally different from what was originally written so long ago. You may be reading the words of a false religious leader, a Roman emperor, a crusader, an evil dictator, or some average joe at the Bible company. It's disgusting, yes, but it is the truth. Just remember that, at its base, Christianity is founded on God's love for all men, both sinners and sinless, and that we know him to be eternally compassionate, wise, loving, and caring. Use that to find his real message.
Another View:
That depends... (forgive me if I go on my undergraduate dissertation was on the distinction between magic and religion).
There are certain prohibition in the Bible against "magic" on the other hand there are also legitimate acts that cause the same results viz the staves of Moses and Aaron turn into snakes in the same manner as those of the "magicians" of Pharoh, the dead are walk in the valley of the dry bones, astrologers are shown the way to the birth of Christ, sortilege (divination by lot) is used to select the successor to Judas, and oneriomancy (divination by dream) is used by Jacob and St Joseph and others.
As a result of these problems the Church decided that the key to supernatural power was its source and this was held to be from either two or three places. The two upon which most writers agree are God and the Devil (this provides the standard dycotomy of Chritianity's view on the subject) however several writers, including St Albertus Magnus the teacher of St Thomas Aquinas, hold that certain results can take place as a result of natural occult (hidden) properties in certain plants animals minerals etc (see Book of Minerals of Albert the Great).
With regard to supernatural power from the Devil (or from the airy spirits called demons who were angels who had supported neither Lucifer nor God) this was divided into explicit pact (your Hammer Horror deal with the devil) and implicit pact. Implicit pact was the idea that although it is not the intent of the practitioner to deal with the devil the nature of what they are trying to do is automatically carried out through the power of evil.
For a fuller description of the actions of a sorcerer see the Handbook for the Inquisitor of Heretical Depravity (published as Manuel pour le Inquisitor) of Bernard Gui.
Opinion & answer
Opinion: On par with the answer above, parlour tricks and illusions and slight of hand are not condemned by the bible. ANSWER: Literally speaking, they aren't magic either. The magic condemned by the bible is the kind that comes from the Devil or evil means..etc.
AnswerSomething that does not exist cannot be forbidden. Logical error in above answer:Although it may be meaningless to forbid something that has no existence (and if one can imagine something then it can be argued that it exists at least conceptually) it is not impossible to do so.Magic does not exist. Magic is an idea, nothing more. for example, I could make up a word like, winyosadorf, and say that winyosadorf is the belief that pigs can fly, but only when nobody's watching, or recording with a camera. Point being, that magic is an idea and does not exist and can not be forbidden.

How do you become a spell casting wizard?
To be honest, the term "wizard" doesn't really exist. Both male and female spell casters are usually called witches. One can become a witch by practicing the religion Wicca for a year and a day. However, one does not have to be a Wiccan to cast a spell. All you need is the spell and the materials required. Just follow the directions, and you've cast the spell!
A Pagan Perspective
Just for the record, not all people who call or consider themselves Witches are Wiccan. Nor do all people who cast spells call or consider themselves Witches.
Casting a spell is simply the manipulation of naturally occurring powers (magic) by the hand and will of a practitioner.
Anyone willing to do the research, and practice is capable of casting spells. Part of that research is learning to use the "power" in an ethical and honest manner.
