Mr. Chocolate is my favorite person of all time. He's a kind, gentle old man living in Nkahta Bay, Malawi. His real name is Finlayson Nyirenda, but everyone calls him Mr. Chocolate because each night he sells chocolate bars to the tourists at one of the hostels in the town called Mayoka Village. He got started in this enterprise several years ago on the advice of an Israeli tourist, and hasn't looked back since. So each night he meticulously lays out his chocolate bars in a very particular order that only he knows, sits next to the table in his designated chair, and promptly dozes off. You have to nudge him when you want some chocolate for him to wake up, and he immediately does with a huge smile on his face and a nice laugh. The chocolate is not cheap, especially for local standards, but you can't help but want to give him your money. I highly recommend engaging him in a conversation about the area, since he has lived for 74 years, well beyond the average life expectancy in Malawi. His family is related to all the chiefs in the area, and he has been a key part in the history of the town during his lifetime. I came to Nkhata Bay intending to stay for a couple of days, but ended up staying for two weeks in Nkhata Bay, in large part, because I couldn't bear to leave Mr. Chocolate. His infectious smile, gentle nature, friendly nature, and giant purple hat have put him at the number one spot on my all time favorite people list. Jim

The Healthy people 2010 program was designed to increase the quality and years of healthy life and help get rid of health issues. The initiative was created in 2000 and was a challenge to communities and individuals to create goals to help them create healthy and longevity.

People are poor and much of the housing is of low quality. Running water and sanitation standards are low. Not all homes have proper toilets. This is improving at present. The houses are small and very basic. Many of the houses are built by hand with handmade bricks, made out of clay. This kind of house is very common in many parts of Malawi. It is also common to see piles of bricks that have been made by people, near their houses.

Some of the land is very dry and barren, but there is some good land there. Farming is still done using very basic tools and implements, with very little mechanisation. Literacy levels are low and the health of the poorer people is not good.

Malawi is landlocked, so it has no seas. The most significant water feature in Malawi is Lake Malawi, which forms a large part of the country.

Most people in that country lives in great poverty. Also, I remember reading that HIV/AIDS is very widespread in this country. That are said to be one of the worst in the world.

The flag of Malawi consists of three equal sized horizontal stripes - the top stripe is black; the middle one red; and the bottom stripe is green. There is a red, rising half-sun in the middle of the top black stripe.

Yes. I have been there. You need to get some injections before going and you need to take Malaria tablets and be careful about drinking water and so on, but it is a safe country. It is very poor, but there are no wars there or civil unrest. It is a beautiful and peaceful country.
