How is mass production useful?

Mass production is useful because it enables manufacturers to produce large quantities of goods efficiently and consistently, leading to lower per-unit costs. This efficiency often results in reduced prices for consumers, making products more accessible. Additionally, mass production can improve quality control, as standardized processes allow for better monitoring and uniformity across products. Ultimately, it supports economies of scale, driving innovation and economic growth.

What is Hardboard made from?

Hardboards are a cheaper option than plywood where strength is not required. Hardboard is made from wood fibre is extracted from chips and pulped wood waste. In the production process the pulp is exploded under pressure. Heat and steam is applies to leave a fine, fluffy brown fibres. These fibres are transformed into mats, which are held together with lignum and other glues. The mats are than pressed between steam-heated metal plates to give grainless sheets with one smooth, glossy surface and one textured surface. To prevent warping, moisture is added in a humidification chamber.

How is silk made into fabrics?

Production of Silk from Cocoon to Factory

Sericulture: The production of cocoon for their filament is called sericulture. The species Bombyx mori is usually cultivated and is raised under controlled condition of environment and nutrition. The life cycle of silk worm encircle in the four stages. The egg, the silk worm, the pupa and the moth. The silk worm which feeds on mulberry leaves forms a covering around it by secreting a protein like substance through its head. This stage is called cocoon, the desirable stage for the silk producers.

Filature operations: The cocoons raised by the farmer are delivered to the factory, called a filature, where the silk is unwound from the cocoons and the strands are collected into skeins. Some cocoons are scientifically bred in such factories. The filature operations consist of the following stages.

a) Sorting cocoons :

The cocoons are sorted according to the color, size, shape and texture as these affect the final quality of the silk. Cocoons may range from white and yellow to grayish.

b) Softening the Sericin : Silk filament is a double strand of fibroin, which is held together by a gummy substance called sericin or silk gum. After the cocoon has been sorted, they are put through a series of hot and cold immersions, as the sericin must be softened to permit the unwinding of the filament as one continuous thread.

c) Reeling the filament : Reeling is the process of unwinding the silk filaments from the cocoon and combining them together to make a thread of raw silk. As the filament of the cocoon is too fine for commercial use, three to ten strands are usually reeled at a time to produce the desired diameter of raw silk which is known as "reeled silk". The useable length of reeled filament is 300 to 600 m.

d) Bailing : The silk filament is reeled into skeins, which are packed in a small bundles called books, weighting 2 to 4.5 kg. These books are put into bales weighing about 60 kg. In this form raw silk is shipped to silk mills all over the world.

What is the value of Tell City Chair Co furniture?

Hello My husband was a young forester on the Tell City Ranger District of the Hoosier National Forest when we wed at Hemlock Cliffs, Indiana, 32 years ago. Tell City furniture was still in its heyday in 1975, churning out Early American furniture that was paired with Stiffel lamps, braided rugs, priscilla curtains and pistol handled stainless flatware. Everybody was buying it, everybody wanted it, along with Ethan Allen, Kling, and a host of other Early American furniture brands. This style seemed to retain its popularity through the mid 1980s'. Episodes of tv shows like "Murder She Wrote" showcase Early American furniture in their sets. I loved this furniture as a bride, but on a journeyman forester's salary, buying it was out of the question. The District Ranger's wife had a housefull that she bought at Hagedorn"s Furniture in Tell City, the official local outlet for the stuff. Starting 9 years ago, when my husband and I came to Florida to work, we began buying used Tell City furniture. The WWII generation brought the stuff with them when they retired, and we quickly were able to round up some beautiful pieces in pristine condition. In 2002, we paid $500 for a medium sized hutch. We also paid $500 for a lovely dining room table (formica top), 2 armchairs and 4 sidechairs. In 2005, we paid $250 for an even nicer hutch. We paid $250 for a dry sink. In 2007 we paid the following prices: $250, double bed. $300, harvest table, 2 armchairs, 4 sidechairs. $75, lazy susan table. $300, very large, very choice hutch. $40, tall mirror. $300, buffet. Today, I got the best deal of all. A Tell City Andover rocking chair in acceptable condition at a thrift store-- $5. The furniture I collect is not old. Tell City Chair Co has been around since the time of the Civil War, so obviously there is stuff out there that is worth lots of money as genuine antiques. But if you are inquiring about the value of Tell City Chair furniture from the recent past, I think these prices, which, except for the rocker, were all negotiated prices with private sellers, are fairly representative of private, non-shop sales prices. Here and there, people like and want this furniture. Most people seem to have zero interest in it, and have it because it is a hand-me-down, or the favorite piece of a family member. "Tell City Furniture" registers with very few people. Most people today seem to want the imported stuff from Asia.

How to calculate various amounts of fabric yardage?

Width Measurement * Separately measure the width (in inches) of each wall you're planning to cover, unless you'll be working around an outside corner; in that case you'll use one fabric cover, starting it at one wall edge, wrapping it around the corner, and continuing to the far edge of the wall. * To find the number of fabric panels required for one wall, divide the width of the wall by the usable width of the fabric, taking into account the amount of fabric taken up in seams (plan 1/2-inch seam allowances). If you are using sheets, use the width of the sheet. If your calculations result in a fraction, add a whole panel. This extra fabric width will give you some leeway to match the pattern at corners.

Height Measurement * Measure the height (in inches) of the same wall from the ceiling line (or lower edge of the ceiling molding) to the top of the baseboard. Take this measurement in several places to check for variations; use the largest figure. Before choosing sheets, be sure your wall is no higher than the length of the sheet. * Add 6 inches to the height measurement as insurance against errors. If the fabric has a pattern repeat, add the repeat length to the height measurement to allow for matching the pattern at the seams. Your final figure is the working height of the wall. Total Fabric Yardage * Multiply the working height figure by the number of fabric panels needed for the wall; divide this figure by 36 to convert to the number of yards of fabric required for the wall you've measured. * Repeat the calculations for each wall you're covering. Add together the yardage for all the walls to determine total required. Add extra yardage if you plan to finish the walls with double welt (instructions for measuring for trim follow). if i have a 54" wide farbric and the chair i want calls for 2 linerar yards but the fabric has a 10% repeat how do i calculate how much total bafric i need?

Why is wood dried out?

Well that depends on what the wood is being used for the two most common reasons to dry wood are for building materials and firewood. In the case of building materials the wood is pre-dried before construction to allow for expansion and contraction due to the drying cycle. Otherwise whatever you are building has the potential to warp or tear itself apart. For the second use of firewood the wood is dried to lower moisture content so that you get a better burn from the wood. By that it is measured by three factors a more complete burning of the material (I.E. cleaner and less waste), two it allows you to harvest a higher energy potential from the wood (I.E. more heat for your home per piece of wood), and lastly the wood will ignite quicker allowing for a fire that is easy to start and smokes less.

Why have manufactured boards been developed?

How do you make a rubber band gun?

There are various ways to make a rubber band gun. They range from simple one-shots to the complicated automatic, 1000 rpm guns seen on some internet videos.

The simplest rubber band gun needs no more than ammunition and your other hand: simply make the gun of your fingers, stretch the band from the fingertips around your thumb and back to your pinky. To fire, simply flex it and send the band flying.

Other pretty simple designs need only a piece of wood, and sometimes a catch for the band. You can hold a piece of wood in one hand, stretch the band along it and use your thumb to hold it in place until you want to shoot it. Others involve something like a small clip or a clothespeg, secured to the wood involved; all you need to do is open the peg to release the band being held, and thus fire it.

Semiautomatic rubber band guns are a little more involved, with several moving parts. Making one is a bit of a challenge, but well worth the effort. Some can figure out the parts and how they should shape up by just thinking for a while, others will need to observe a premade one or perhaps dismantle and copy it. Basically, you need a toothed wheel to hold the bands, and a trigger assembly (usually of one piece) that can release one tooth per pull, yet prevent the next ones going at the same time. For some inspiration, have a look at how pendulum clocks work, specifically the escapement mechanism.

The bigger ones, often powered by motors or cranks and shooting sometimes hundreds per minute, are just a lot of these semiautos attached to the same weapon, and controlled by a catch to pull the trigger when it should. For these, you realy need experience at developing the smaller versions, as well as some know-how in the fields of either simple electronics or of simple mechanics - both is pretty good.

How big you make any of these depends only on the size of the bands being fired; if you can choose that size, then it depends only on how big you want to make it.
