How long is a 13k marithon?

I think you are a little confused.

If a race is 13k then the distance is 13 kilometres, obviously.

There is no such thing as a 13k marathon.

A marathon is 26.2 miles, or 42.2km - with a half-marathon being half that distance, obviously.

So, there is a chance that your 13km marathon refers to the 13.1 miles that are in a half-marathon.

Hope that helps.

What does chip time mean in marathons?

There are two methods of timing a marathon: Gun Time or Real Time or Official Time: The time from the sound of the starter's signal to the time the runner crosses the finish line. Real Time or Chip Time: The time it takes to go from crossing the starting line to crossing the finish line. Races will supply runners with a computer chip, programmed with the runner's personal and race information, that is attached to one of their shoes, usually a shoelace. Some chips come with velcro and are attached around the ankle. The chip records when you cross the starting line, which has a mat that activates the timing, and when you cross the finish line, which also has a mat to deactivate the timing. Most large marathons use chip time since it allows runners to line up at the start with folks that can run about the same pace. They won't have to worry about pushing through slower paced runners to get to the front or being pushed by faster paced runners.

How do they keep track of the runners at the checkpoints of a marathon?

All runners are assigned a number at the start of the race. When a runner passes a checkpoint the number is checked on a list. This way the runners don't have to stop to put their names down.

How does the battle of Marathon and Pheidippides impact modern day sporting events?

When the Persians landed a force at Marathon to attack Athens, the Athenians sent Pheidippides to ask the Spartans to help them. He ran the 120 miles to Sparta and back and died of exhaustion on his return.

The Athenians were forced to fight the Persian before the Spartans arrived. After they defeated the Persian infantry, they realised that the Persian cavalry's absence was due to it being rowed around the coast to attack Athens in their absence. So the 9,000 Athenian armoured soldiers ran back to Athens and formed up in front of the city just as the Persian cavalry was being disembarked and preparing to gallop up and take the city with traitors opening the gates for them.

So Pheidippides was dead. It was the Athenian army which ran the 26 miles to Athens, not him giving the good news of the battle lf Marathon (which is the fake story peddled today). This run by the Athenian army is celebrated today by the marathon race of 26 miles held during the Olympic Games and elsewhere for distance runners. The difference is that today's brave runners don't carry armour and weapons and wear sandals.
