i think it can help if your really going through some hard times. but the most way that it will be effective if you have an opened mind and are willing to learn, and improve the areas that need patching.

If she went without you knowing what the trip meant to you, then you probably have to have a serious conversation about your relationship. At the very least it sounds like a very selfish thing to do and at worst she is trying to make a statement to you.

Although it is beneficial to participate in counseling with someone who knows both parties well, it is a good idea to be careful of the potential harm of a dual relationship.
