What are some interesting places for a family with young kids to visit in Maui Hawaii?

Depends how young, but two of the "bigger attractions" include the Maui Ocean Center (the island's aquarium at Ma'alaea which is WONDERFUL) from which you can also choose a whale watching boat trip during the right time of year, and hen there's the "Sugar Train" that runs north from Lahaina to Ka'anapali.

Be careful taking kids up Haleakala because like going up or coming down in an airplane, your ears need to "pop" because of the change of elevation. Unfortunately, unlike a plane, which makes the transition pretty quickly so you may only have to do this a couple of times, it's a slow haul up and considering it's 10,000 feet up, you start having to play the ear pop routine as much as every 1,000 feet or so.

The Iao Valley is a beautiful spot if you don't think they'll last the potentially all day road to Hana, is still free, and includes a little taro field in the middle. It has fruit trees, and you can find interesting spiders and spot a gecko here and there.

Visit a beach with black (volcanic) sand instead of a white sand beach. Depending on age, some of the more sheltered beaches are great for some pretty harmless boogie boarding. Some of the higher end resorts have water park type features, and depending if they're a bit older and can hold their attention long enough, there's a magic show, a song and dance show about the history of the islands, and of course a luau that would include your mandatory fire-dancer.

There seems to be a miniature golf course near the aquarium but we've never seen it open, and there is supposedly a small bowling alley in Wailuku but we've never been there.

There are a lot of "free" shows especially during winter and spring break periods at various shopping centers: Shops at Wailea, Whaler's Village and such, where there is "keiki hula" or younger people doing hula shows. Some resorts have activities that include making your own kukui (a round nut a little smaller than a pecan) necklace, or learn hula, or ukulele. There's also a trip to the Banyan Tree in Lahaina which takes up an entire block, and there's one guy in front of the Pioneer Inn next door who seems to have a permanent set up to take a picture of you with macaws and cockateels on your shoulders (for a hefty fee).

Depending on when you go, there's a rodeo upcountry near Makawao. There's also a goat farm/dairy where you can pet the animals.

There are some museums that include activities like lei making, or the sugar museum at the only remaining active sugar mill, which you can also tour.

If these aren't enough ideas before you get there, absolutely go to your hotel concierge or the racks and racks of activity pamphlets.

What is the meaning behind the myth of maui attacting the sun?

To summarize the link below in brief for you, it is the Hawaiian version of the Polynesian (and potentially more ancient) version of the creation story insofar as it concerns the sun or sunlight. (I think of the Judeo-Christian creation story of God creating light on the first day of creation.) For Polynesians, apparently the god Maui captured the sun. The story traveled with the Polynesians who first inhabited the Hawaiian islands, and named the island Maui for this god.

The now dormant volcano on Maui called Haleakala literally means house-of-the-sun (hale-a-ka-la with the word "la" meaning sun).

I am thinking that when the islands were first inhabited Haleakala was the tallest mountain (more like 15,000 whereas today after intervening eruptions its around 10,000 ft) on the islands hence naming this island since it was closest to the sun.

What tourist attraction in Hawaii has 59 bridges?

The road on the east-side of Maui that goes from Kahului to Hana and beyond, commonly referred to as the Hana Highway. Some guidebooks state it has 56 one-lane bridges, but that depends on where you start or stop counting since the road continues around the bottom of the island. Also, some claim it has 617 curves over 52 miles. I'm not sure what counts as a curve, but that gives you a general idea of what to expect on this challenging but absolutely beautiful drive.

When is the tourist off season in Maui?

If you go to Maui in Hawaii for a week in mid March will you be able to get a good tan?

If the weather holds, it is typically very nice....where are you staying (Kaanapali, Kapalua or Kehei?) Kehei can get a bit breezy, so sometimnes the pool at your hotel/condo is the best option. Kapalua is a little cooler than Kaanapali area. If you want the best "all over" tan, Little Beach is the place to be.

How many islands are in maldives how many resorts?

Just as the early history of Maldives is obscured in mystery, so is the exact number of islands in the archipelago. The British Admiralty chart lists some 1,100 islands, while a recent government count found 1,196. If sand bars and coral outcrops were included the figure would have been close to 2,000. For amount of resorts go to :_

What are the requirements when moving a dog from the mainland to Maui?

Aloha. Answer: Call the Hawai`i Agriculture Dept. at (808) 483-7151. The State of Hawai`i has ordered mandatory furloughs for all state employees effective October 23, 2009. The two-day per month furlough, combined with previous layoffs and budget restrictions require that the Animal Quarantine inspection operations be reduced for pets arriving at Honolulu International Airport (HIA).

Effective December 1, 2009 inspection hours for dog and cats at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) will be between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays. This information is particularly important for those who are qualifying their pets for direct release at the airport. Pet owners should be sure to arrange for their flights to arrive by 3:30 p.m. because it may take up to one hour for the airlines to transport a pet to the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility and animals not arriving at the facility by 4:30 p.m. will not be released at the airport that day. Pets arriving in the late afternoon and evening will be held overnight until inspections are completed the following morning. Pet owners who are connecting to neighboring islands should pay particular attention to the change in inspection hours. (An advisory was posted on this website on August 17, 2009 to advise pet owners of the probability of reduced inspection hours.)

The Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility at HIA will continue to accept pets arriving from airlines at all times of the day. The reduced hours are for inspection operations and airport release.
