Hi This might sound a bit silly, but it depends on what you need. Everything except pineapples needs to be imported into Hawaii, so you pay more for everything: food, gas, cars, dog food, milk, Burger King. The one thing I found surprisingly reasonable was the cost of housing. Last time I was on Oahu in 2003 you could buy a condex is a highrise not too far from Waikiki Beach for 89,000 and since then the housing market has tanked. So if you don't need to buy too much of anything, and can get into one of these inexpensive places to live, then the actual "cost of living" is no more than you want to make it. you can get top tobacco for under 5 bucks otherwise every thing is 8 to 15 dollars. pall malls are like 8 to 9, camels 9 to 10. marbs 8 to 12. american spirits are 9 to 12 dollars. i think the generics are like 8 not sure. its expensive here. usually end up going with top. just bring your own from the mainland like a carton. then you can go to front street lahaina and bum them out to everyone
