Mediterranean Sea

The entire Mediterranean Sea (and major regions of the Black Sea additionally) came to be regarded as a Roman sea for many reasons. First and foremost was that Rome (as the Greeks before them) were a naval and coastal imperial power. Where there were coasts, there were Roman settlements, and not surprisingly the core of the Empire was along the Mediterranean's shores spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia Minor and North Africa.

It is not completely surrounde by land. It has a strait opening it to the ocean.

The most famous one is the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine. There are other minor ones like the Thracian Peninsula and Taman Peninsula.
