Who is the fastest human swimmer alive?

The fastest men's 50 yards freestyle (in a 25 yard pool) was clocked by Brazilian swimmer Cesar Cielo at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in 2008. Swimming for Auburn University, he was the lead swimmer in the 200 yard freestyle relay. He swam his 50 yard leg free in 18.47 seconds.

The world record for the men's short course 50 meter freestyle (in a 25 meter pool) is held by Roland Schoeman of South Africa with a time of 20.30 seconds. It was swum at the 2009 South African Short Course Championships.

The world record for the men's long course 50 meter freestyle (in a 50 meter pool) is also held by Cesar Cielo with a time of 20.91 seconds. It was swum at the Brazilian World Championships held by the Brazilian Aquatic Sports Confederation (CDBA) in 2009.

Cielo completed his 50 yard free record in the first leg of a relay. This relay swim counted toward the record since all first leg relay swims do qualify for individual event records. Subsequent legs of relays (2nd, 3rd, and 4th legs) do not qualify for individual event records. The reason for this is that these subsequent swimmers have an advantage at the start of their leg of the race. They are permitted to swing their arms and thrust their body momentum forward as the previous swimmer touches the wall. Only the tips of the feet have to be on the blocks when the previous swimmer touches. Therefore, they can be practically in the air as the previous swimmer touches. This gives them an advantage over the 1st-leg swimmer who must do a conventional start and is not permitted to move until the starting buzzer sounds. This difference in starts in the reason 1st-leg swimmers in relays can clock slower times than their relay teammates.

Also although the 50 yard free is predominantly swum only in the U.S., there are many other countries' swimmers who compete in yard pools -- particularly in U.S. NCAA swimming. Thus short course records can be 'world records' in a semantic sense (although it is important to note that USA Swimming and FINA do not recognize this terminology).
