When I got a new Windows computer the first icons on the desktop where those of the factory-loaded programs. So I would assume that if there was no factory loaded programs nothing would appear!

Most Macintosh word processing software provides some compatibility with Microsoft's Word. For example if you are using the Mac version of Microsoft's Word then you save the page. If you are using TextEdit you Save the file selecting one of the Word .doc options from the File Format menu at the bottom of the Save pane. If you are using Pages tick the box Save copy as Word Document in the save pane.

The big breakthrough in making computing accessible to all was the Personal Computer, which was developed into the mass market by IBM. There were PCs before the IBM PC, but they were not successfully marketed at a huge scale.

IBM bought the disk operating system, the software to make the machine work, from Microsoft. Microsoft had itself bought the system from Seattle Software Works and they just licensed it to IBM.

There were other disk operating systems out there, including the very popular CP/M and MS-DOS was more or less derived from and very similar to CP/M.

The IBM PC took off spectacularly, and Microsoft became very rich. But their flair was (and still is) in marketing, not in invention. Mice, windows interfaces, desktop images, icons, etc. etc, were invented elsewhere, some by Xerox at their Palo Alto research centre, some by Apple, and quite a lot from the various Unix flavours out there.

The newer version of server will, but not the older one. The NT dialog boxes still limited passwords to a maximum of 14 characters.

When are records transferred from the general alphabetic file to the numbered file?

If you're using Microsoft Word: Ctrl and F2 (whilst still pressing the Ctrl key).

Alt - F - V will also work.

It's very easy actually. First, go to TinyURL.com. To the left of the browser bar (the one you just used to type in the URL), there is a small icon with the TinyURL logo on it. Simply drag that icon onto your toolbar, where ever you want, and you instantly have a toolbar button linking to it. Now, you can right-click on the button, go to Properties, and edit the name, location, and whatever else you want.

Alternately, you can right click on your toolbar and select "New Bookmark", then type in the URL of whatever website you want it to go to.

The only problem is that eventaully you will have goodness knows how many icons on your toolbar and eventually you will run out of room.

You can easily make a bookmarking toolbar in Firefox and organise all your most frequently visited sites in folders. I have a toolbar that has 11 folders containing nearly 80 bookmarks to the sites I use all the time, including article sites and my blogs.

It is very easy to make Firefox toolbar and I have added a link to the step by step guide I made, once I worked out how to do it.

I am not an expert in IT but here is what I have done when networking the 2000 and XP.

Hardware The most obvious is the hardware requirement. A network card on each machine and a CAT5 cross-over cable to link both machines up.

Assumption: No domain has been setup but only the workgroup.

Software configuration Under XP Professional, you need to run the Network wizard. By following the dialogs and a XP setup disc, the wizard will complete in no time at all. There are a few selection on how you would like the configuration for your network. I think the issue is whether you also want internet sharing as well. Yet this is another matter.

A network bridge would be setup automatically. You can check this by going to Control panel, Network and Internet Connections and Network Connections. Open the Network bridge properties and you would see a setup for Local Area Connection. Goto the bottom dialog and select TCP/IP then click the Properties button.

Select use the following IP address, then do the following: IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Then OK to leave all the settings.

Under 2000 professional, the most important is the same computer workgroup name as the XP machine. Goto Network and Dial-up Connections. double click on "Make New Connection", select the last point and follow the rest of the instruction. You need to select "Obtain an IP address automatically" under TCP/IP properties and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Just to remind you that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" should also been installed on both machines.

Now the setup is more or less completed.

On both machines, open up a command prompt window and do the following:

1. Type in "IPconfig /all" to check the IP address of the both machines. The XP machine should have

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: <none> Description: <your hardware network card name> DHCP Enabled: No IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0. Default Gateway: <none>

The 2000 machine should have

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: mshome.net Description: <your hardware network card name> DHCP Enabled: Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes IP address of 192.168.0.100 (for example) Subnet: 255.255.255.0. Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server: 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1

Then use the Ping command on both machine to check the network is working. The last thing to check is that a network icon is active (ie. flashing) at the right hand bottom of the task bar.

Remember if you want to share you files and folders on your XP machine, remember to place them in Share document folder. Then your 2000 machine can map the drive to see and work on the files.

Sorry a bit long but I suppose it is worth it. Because I am no expert on this subject, there must be a better way than mine and I would love learn from other readers.

Well unless they tends to break things, It would be Ok I reckon, However you should consider the value of it, I would want my child having a reckless moment around it lol, Go with a normal laptop unless he has specific needs like High powered gaming, Video editing or acting as a server.

You right-click and then on the menu that pops up you click 'extract files' and the files will be put in a regular folder.

If it's coming from a floppy you would first remove the clip on it. If it is not a floppy, or if you tried the previous step, then you should try removing the read-only attribute. In DOS, you would use the Attrib command, using -R and the filename as the parameters. In Windows, you go to the properties for that file and make sure it is not flagged as read-only. If it is, change it and select Apply or Ok.

If the disk is not physically write-protected, and if the read-only flag is not set, then the file is likely in use. You can install a tiny file extension called Unlocker to allow you to delete files that are locked by the system because they are being used.

You should let it run disk utilities when it comes on. If you cannot get into it, you might need to run a repair install of Windows.

Helps to organize related files together. Folders are called directories in some operating systems (e.g. MSDOS), but the analogy to a paper file folder was seen as helpful to understanding when graphical OSs were created.
