How do you reset the bios password on a Hp 8440p?

You may have to get a technician to take out the CMOS battery.

Depending on the model, there is usually a pair of reset pads under the memory modules.

Short these out for a second, using a short piece of wire or tweezers.

This will rest everything including all the BIOS settings, password and clock, so you may need to set it back up on restart.

If you are not sure, take it to a technician.

When booting a computer what is the boot priority?

In the system BIOS you can tell the computer to "look at" a drive to boot from first . There you can select to boot from a removable drive, usually a floppy disk or USB flash drive(this option is found on most Linux systems). You can also choose to boot from a CDROM drive or Hard Disc(you hard drives).

This is what all my system say and the ones I repair:

1. Removable Drive -- Usually a floppy drive (an emergency boot disk) is what it is talking about here.

2. CD-ROM Drive -- I have this set at two so I can special disks before I get to the desktop or dashboard(Mac).

3. Hard Disks -- This is your hard drive.

What advantage does NTFS offer over FAT32?

Fat32 is a type of Fat file system.

Fat file system has 3 types

1) Fat12 2)Fat16 3)Fat32

The number in the names of file systems represents no. of bits used in the addressing scheme.

more bits means more addresses, so large drives are accessed and addressed through the file system.

Fat12 was used only for very small drives, floppies and tiny hard drives.

Fat16 is used for only upto the drive/partitions up to 2GB.

Fat32 is is used for addressing upto 2TB drives/partitions.

Before Fat32 the when there was Fat16 was available only, that had 16 bits to address, was called as the Fat simpally.

Why do most versions of Linux and Windows use the CD command to change directions?

Both copied the command from Unix. Unix probably copied it from somewhere too.

Answer

When Tim Patterson of Seattle Computer Products was originally contracted by Microsoft to write an operating system for the original IBM PC, he included the 'cd' command to change directories, probably owing to his previous Unix experience. However, we cannot blame Tim for any imperfections in Microsoft DOS or it's evolutionary descendants, the original Microsoft DOS was pulled from Tim long before he was finished with it by Microsoft's Bill Gates in order to demo it for IBM in Boca Raton Florida. Whats the difference between a firewall and a antivirus system?

Answer

A firewall is a software componet that regulates the internet use of programs already installed on your system. Most firewalls do only that. However, there is something called a 2 way firewall. A 2 way firewall is a firewall that scans files being downloaded to your computer and stops unauthorized programs from using your internet connection to visit websites. Why is a 2 way firewall best. Well it helps to stop the potentially harmful code or malware as it usually called from infecting your computer. By anti virus system you must mean anti virus software. Anti virus software is programs that try to search for, find and remove or neutrilize a virus.

A simple firewall like the Windows Firewall in XP and Vista protects you from outside attack by making your computer's ports invisible to outsiders and by refusing to accept incoming data packets that were not requested. Third-party personal firewalls also control which programs can use your Internet connection to contact sites outside your computer - so they offer two-way protection.

An antivirus utility scans the files and Registry on your computer to detect and remove viruses and other malicious software. Its realtime component prevents malicious programs from installing or launching in the first place.

The two are quite different and both necessary.

Yes you can easily increase RAM of your laptop. First you need to find compatible memory type for your laptop. It will depend on the laptop configuration (like chipset). Most laptops made in last 3-4 years have DDR2 SODIMM memory type. You can also use some of the free utilities like cpuz from cpuid.com to find exact chipset, type of memory installed including size, speed etc. installed in your computer currently in each slot. Before you buy the memory you can once open the memory area cover from base side of the laptop to have a look at the memory slots. This will give you confidence that once you have new modules with you will be able to open up the unit and install the modules.
