False. The Soviet Union underwent a forced transformation from an agricultural to industrial economy 60 years before Gorbachev - under Stalin. Read all about it on Wiki Answers.

Under Mikhail Gorbachev which policy eased censorship in the Soviet Union?

Gorbachev's policy that eased censorship in the Soviet Union and introduced many other democratic freedoms was referred to as glasnost, which literally means "openness".

What was the new Soviet policy of Glasnost?

Glasnost roughly translates from Russian as "openness" or transparency of governmental activities. It was designed to end the corruption and abuses of Soviet party leaders, to improve the stagnant economy, to reduce censorship, and to give greater freedom of expression in the USSR. This was a major change from the previously covert and authoritarian Leninist rule in the USSR. It was initiated under the premiership of Mikhail Gorbachev, who ironically became the last leader of the Soviet Union, as Russia soon lost its grip on the other republics and the satellite states.

Was Mikhail Gorbachev the first and only president of the Soviet Union?

Short answer

Yes, Gorbachev was the first and only person to bear the official title of the President of the Soviet Union. The office of the President was created in 1990 and existed until 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. Gorbachev held it the whole time.

An elaboration on why some may not consider Gorbachev the first or only president of the USSR follows.

In all fairness, prior to 1990, the Soviet government had a post officially called The Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the soviet Union - a title as unpronounceable as it was symbolic. If you peel away the world jumble, this title amounts to what in the West is called a "President".

In reality, it was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union who held all the power. People were not fooled; it is easy to find a good list of every General Secretary the USSR ever had, but most people don't even know the Soviet Union had what can technically be called a president much less what his name was - and that includes Russians themselves.

Incidentally, Gorbachev started out as the General Secretary 1985, became the Chairman of the Presidium 1988, and finally was elected President in 1990 in something of a free election.

The reason people think Gorbachev was the only president of the USSR is, Gorbachev was the only person who was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Presidium at the same time. These men were all Presidents of the USSR: Mikhail Kalinin, Nikolay Shvernik, Kliment Voroshilov, Leonid Brezhnev (served two terms, died in his second), Vasili Kuznetsov (served three terms), Yuri Andropov, Konstantin Chernenko, Andrei Gromyko and Mikhail Gorbachev. There are several men who were General Secretaries, but only Gorbachev was General Secretary and President at the same time.

Did relations improve between the US and Soviet Union after Mikhail Gorbachev came to power?

Gorbachev wanted to increase relations due to the economy in Russia and its dependency on China, so for the good of Russia he initiated the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev ran the Soviet Union with much more openness than the earlier Premiers. Soviet spokesmen began to be viewed as more willing to speak to foreign press, and other nations. While the U.S. and USSR were still engaged in the Cold War it seemed as if there was a thaw with more open communication between the two and a willingness to discuss serious matters such as reducing nuclear weapons. So yes relations did improve after Gorbachev came to power. Though there were some times of worry as a result of the Pandora's Box that he opened, in the end his period of rule heralded the end of the Cold War.

Where does Mikhail Gorbachev live?

Raisa's death, after several years of ill-health, left Gorbachev bereft. He lives in Moscow, has not remarried and finds solace with his daughter and grand-daughters. He would not be coaxed to talk about Raisa, except fleetingly in the context of the charity.
