Gnosticism was an important branch of Christianity during the first centuries, perhaps even rivalling in size the branch that was to become the Catholic-Orthodox Church. The Christian emperors of the fourth century sought to have one single Christianity and considered Gnosticism divisive, forcing its remnants underground.

Prior to 1945, little was known of the Gnostic beliefs or of their writings. Then a collection of thirteen ancient codices containing over fifty texts, was discovered at Nag Hammadi in upper Egypt. This contained a large number of primary Gnostic scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth, many of which were once thought to have been entirely destroyed during the early Christian struggle to define orthodoxy. These manuscripts had been buried to avoid their destruction as the persecution of Gnostics spread to Egypt. With this and other discoveries, scholars now have a broad range of gospels and other writings sacred to the Gnostics.

Some of the Gnostic writings, such as the Gospel of Thomas, were originally considered for inclusion in the Catholic-Orthodox New Testament, at least after amendment to bring them into line with 'orthodox' theology. Even the Gospel of John is considered by some scholars to have originally been a Gnostic writing. Some of Paul's epistles are compatible with Gnostic thinking, and the early Gnostics looked to him as some form of founder or patron of Gnosticism.

In most places, no. Even if they legally could receive unemployment, in most cases it would be unethical for them to do so. Missionaries are typically supported by some sort of organization. Many missionaries are not technically employed, but they do receive donations and support from a church, ministry, or charity. Also, missionaries are voluntarily unemployed, and unemployment benefits are generally reserved for those who have been laid off or who are unable to work due to disability.

There were many in the Old Testament who were doing missionary work long before the appearance of Christ, Adam being the first as well as his sons Able and Seth. Perhaps even Cain until he came under the influence of Satan.

In fact, Judaism was a missionary religion during the early days of Christianity. We know that Jewish missionaries travelled widely, converting Gentiles. It is believed that in some cases, a missionary would assure potential converts that they need not undergo adult circumcision as long as they believed, but a later missionary would come along and demand to know why the converts were not yet circumcised. We also know that in Medina in the seventh century, Muhammad encountered two tribes that had converted to Judaism. I do not believe that China has opened its boarders to Missionaries yet. Hong Kong however has many missionaries.

There are two types of schools (at least) that are often called "missionary schools". I am speaking within the context of Christian missions.

1. The most common use of the term is an elementary or high school started and run by missionaries. In some parts of the world (historically, and even to this day) there are places where education, (reading, writing, math, etc.), are not taught or taught so poorly that local children are at a disadvantage. Christian missionaries would set up schools for the children. Often they would teach, but may also utlize the services of local teachers. As misisonaries, they would typically incorporate the Holy Bible into the training, as well as Christian doctrine and ethics.

2. In some cases the term can be used as a short form for "missionary training school." In this case, it describes a school or training program designed to train people in the theory and practice of mission work.

Yes they can, so long as the friend remembers that the Missionary has a special assignment and all correspondence should be kept to a minimum in content. Remarks as to how they are keeping, and interesting facts regarding their friends and family which will not cause any unnecessary worry to the missionary should be kept in mind.
