Why do Mormons have family dress them for burial?

Having family members dress the deceased for burial is a tradition within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 'Mormon' church). It isn't a requirement. If the family is unable or does not wish to dress the deceased, it is often done by someone from the congregation or by the funeral home/mortuary.

The Church Handbook of Instruction says that male leaders in the congregation may be asked to dress deceased males and female leaders in the congregation may be asked to dress deceased females. (see sections 18.6.2; 7.10.2; and 9.10.3)

These guidelines of having family or congregation leaders dress the dead really only apply when the deceased has been endowed in the temple, as it is expected that they will be buried wearing the ceremonial temple clothing, or that it will be folded and placed in the casket. If a deceased Mormon was not endowed in the temple, they will not be buried with the ceremonial clothing and can be dressed by anyone - usually the mortuary.

Mormons and aliens?

Nothing, really.

A few leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly known as 'Mormons') have mentioned both historically and more modern that there are other earths with other people on them. This may be where the 'alien' rumor comes from. However, these are not aliens, they are human beings just like you or I, on earths similar to the one we live on. Some might also consider the fact that members of the church believe in heavenly messengers and angels as a belief in aliens. So, yes members of the church believe there is life on other planets, but they do not believe in little green men in silver jumpsuits or consider them 'aliens'. Are Mormons classified as counterculture?

Counterculture: the culture and lifestyle of those people, esp. among the young, who reject or oppose the dominant values and behavior of society. Yes and no. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and its members (commonly called Mormons) do reject some values and behaviors that are popular and dominant in our society today, but they do not reject them BECAUSE they are popular, they reject them because they believe they are not acceptable to God.

Saying someone is 'counterculture' implies that they try to be 'different' than everyone else, whereas church members are just trying to be righteous and upright individuals, whether that means they are like the dominant culture or not. Yes, they do oppose such things as premarital and extramarital sex, homosexual behavior, immodest dress, alcohol and drug use, and coffee and tobacco, which are dominant in our society today. They do not oppose these things because they are trying to 'go against the grain', but because they are morally opposed to them. If the rest of society also did not drink alcohol, Mormons would not switch to drinking it, but continue to avoid it. There is evidence of this in the fact that members of the church do not reject ALL parts of popular culture - they do drive cars, go to public school, use TV and internet, wear modern clothes, dance, listen to secular music, etc.

What is a Mormon sealing in the temple?

A 'Sealing' is a sacred ordinance performed in the Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church). A sealing is performed at an altar in a sealing room, and is performed by a priesthood holder who has been given the authority to seal by the Prophet of the Church.

When a Mormon couple goes to the temple to get married, they are actually participating in a sealing. A sealing binds couples and families for eternity, meaning that if you are sealed in the temple, your marriage and family unit will continue in heaven after death. Couples may go to the temple to be sealed at the time of their marriage or later (especially if they join the church after they are married) or they may go to have adopted children sealed to them. Children who are born to a couple that is already sealed are considered 'born in the covenant', meaning they do not have to be sealed to their parents in the Temple.

A sealing consists of a blessing is pronounced upon those being sealed, and those being sealed making a covenant that, if broken, anulls the sealing. Family and friends who are members of the Church are often invited to attend the sealing service.

Do Mormons believe Monogamy is ordained by God and has always been an unconditional requirement?

Mormons believe that monogamy is ordained of God, yes, but they do not believe this has always been an unconditional requirement. There were many great men in the Bible who were not monogamists, and God even approved of their having multiple wives. Mormons believe that there have been certain times throughout history where certain people were either commanded or allowed to take additional wives - monogamy is the rule unless commanded otherwise by God.

What is the percentage of Mormons in St George Utah?

I dont know of anywhere to find Mormon popluation statistics for an area smaller than an entire state, but from personal experience in St. George I would estimate about 70%, possibly higher.

>>> I would call Mormon church headquarters and tell them you are working on a school project and need to know how many members are in the St. George area. Then, find out the population of the area. That should do the trick!

What do Mormons call non Mormons?

Most Mormons are not mean in calling non Mormons names. When referring to non Mormons, they are usually called non members. It's not to offend people, it's just when you're classifying all non Mormons, you have to say something. Former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley suggested called non Mormons "Friends of other faiths" as a kinder-sounding term, but it didn't really catch on.

^^Good answer. When referring to someone who is not a member of the church we call them non members. If they are a member but hardly ever go we just call them inactive. Its not in anyway to offend anyone.

If the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday do Mormons not celebrate it that day?

When the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday, Mormons usually spread the celebration over two days. They spend Saturday doing traditional Fourth of July things - having barbeque's, parades, parties, and watching fireworks displays.

As America, independence, and patriotism are very important concepts in the Church, Sunday is spent thanking God for the blessings we receive for being citizens of this country. (This is usually done on the Sunday closest to the 4th each year) Patriotic songs and hymns are sung during worship services, and the service often ends with the congregation rising to sing the National Anthem. The messages in the service are often about being thankful for our nation or honoring veterans and others who have fought for our freedoms and liberties.

How much land does the LDS Church own in Utah?

This would be almost impossible to count as the Church owns thousands of chapels, hundreds of temples, family history centers, seminaries and institutes of religion, family and employment services offices, numerous charitable storehouses, food processing facilities, farms and ranches, historical sites, visitors centers and museums, office buildings, residential and commercial properties, four universities, distribution centers, and plants and factories to produce church publications and clothing products. They also own who-knows-how-many undeveloped lots for future projects. All I can tell you for sure is that it is A LOT of land and that little, if any, of it is mortgaged.

The Church does not usually disclose its properties or other financial information to the public, but if you would like to contact the Church administration and headquarters directly to see if they can give you further information, you can do so at:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
50 East North Temple
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150

or by calling (801) 240-1000

What happens in the temple when a Mormon couple get married?

When a Mormon couple gets married in the temple they first go in to the office and sign the marriage license and certificate, and fill out some paperwork.

They then go into locker rooms to change into their white clothing. In most temples there is a special room only for brides where the bride can have a special place to change into her wedding dress with the help of her mom or other female escort. She needs to have her hair and makeup done ahead of time.

After the couple have changed, the sealer (the person performing the marriage) often meets with them privately for a few minutes just to discuss what the ceremony is going to be like, and leads them into the sealing room where family and friends are waiting.

Usually there is only a small group of their closest friends and there, as the largest sealing room in the Temple holds only about 70 people, but most hold about 20.

There is an altar in the middle of the room, chairs for guests on either side, chairs for the sealer and two witnesses on one side, and two chairs for the bride and groom on the other. Usually there are mirrors on opposite walls in the sealing room, so when they couple looks into them, they can "see into eternity". They will sit on their chairs while the sealer gives them some marriage advice, and then they will kneel at the altar while the sealer performs the sealing. He will then introduce the couple to the guests as man and wife and give everyone an opportunity to congratulate them.

The couple then goes back to their dressing rooms to change into the clothes they are going wear as they exit the Temple for photos. (In the temple, the bride must wear a long sleeve white dress and the groom white pants and long sleeve white shirt, so often couples will have a second dress, tux etc. for outside the temple). Most couples then go outside the temple to get wedding photos taken with their family and friends, as photography is not allowed inside the temple.

See the related links below to see photos of a temple Brides Room and a Sealing Room, as well as a typical wedding photo.

How long is a Mormon service for the deceased?

This is entirely up to the wishes of the individual or the family. Some might wish to have a short funeral and some may wish to have a long one.

A pretty typical Mormon funeral would be as follows:

Viewing: This is usually an open-house type format and is held for a few hours before the main service. This enables you to give your personal condolences to the family or to say your goodbyes to the deceased.

Funeral Service: This is usually about an hour, although it could be shorter or longer. It would consist of prayers, hymns, eulogies from friends and family, and possibly a short sermon from a church leader.

Grave Dedication: The funeral party usually travels to the cemetery where a short grave dedication ceremony is held (expect about 15-30 minutes).

Luncheon: It is common that the local Mormon congregation will provide lunch or dinner for the mourners immediately following the funeral. This is usually quite casual and you can leave when you like.

It is not expected that everyone will attend all four of these events, although you may if you wish. Most who are not close family or friends attend just the main funeral service or stop in during the viewing to greet the family.

Customs vary in other areas of the world, but this format is pretty common among Mormon funerals in the US, Canada, and Europe.

Is Bill Gates a Mormon?

NO. The church would greatly benefit from a 10% tithe from him though! ;)

Can a christian girl marry a Mormon boy?

This should not even be a question. If you love one another, then it is stupid for anything to stop you! Religion is both lies and truth. You never know which is which though. If God loves us all, why would he separate us and give us boundaries to our lives which we were allowed the right to control?.
