What is the temple in the Mormon church?

There are 13 temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called Mormons) in Utah. The most well known is the Salt Lake Temple, the others are St. George, Logan, Manti, Ogden, Provo, Jordan River, Vernal, Mount Timpanogos, Bountiful, Monticello, Draper, and Oquirrh Mountain.

Photo galleries of each of them can be found at the links found at the "Related Links" below.

Do Mormons believe Monogamy is ordained by God and has always been an unconditional requirement?

Mormons believe that monogamy is ordained of God, yes, but they do not believe this has always been an unconditional requirement. There were many great men in the Bible who were not monogamists, and God even approved of their having multiple wives. Mormons believe that there have been certain times throughout history where certain people were either commanded or allowed to take additional wives - monogamy is the rule unless commanded otherwise by God.

What is the percentage of Mormons in St George Utah?

I dont know of anywhere to find Mormon popluation statistics for an area smaller than an entire state, but from personal experience in St. George I would estimate about 70%, possibly higher.

>>> I would call Mormon church headquarters and tell them you are working on a school project and need to know how many members are in the St. George area. Then, find out the population of the area. That should do the trick!

What do Mormons call non Mormons?

Most Mormons are not mean in calling non Mormons names. When referring to non Mormons, they are usually called non members. It's not to offend people, it's just when you're classifying all non Mormons, you have to say something. Former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley suggested called non Mormons "Friends of other faiths" as a kinder-sounding term, but it didn't really catch on.

^^Good answer. When referring to someone who is not a member of the church we call them non members. If they are a member but hardly ever go we just call them inactive. Its not in anyway to offend anyone.

If the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday do Mormons not celebrate it that day?

When the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday, Mormons usually spread the celebration over two days. They spend Saturday doing traditional Fourth of July things - having barbeque's, parades, parties, and watching fireworks displays.

As America, independence, and patriotism are very important concepts in the Church, Sunday is spent thanking God for the blessings we receive for being citizens of this country. (This is usually done on the Sunday closest to the 4th each year) Patriotic songs and hymns are sung during worship services, and the service often ends with the congregation rising to sing the National Anthem. The messages in the service are often about being thankful for our nation or honoring veterans and others who have fought for our freedoms and liberties.

How much land does the LDS Church own in Utah?

This would be almost impossible to count as the Church owns thousands of chapels, hundreds of temples, family history centers, seminaries and institutes of religion, family and employment services offices, numerous charitable storehouses, food processing facilities, farms and ranches, historical sites, visitors centers and museums, office buildings, residential and commercial properties, four universities, distribution centers, and plants and factories to produce church publications and clothing products. They also own who-knows-how-many undeveloped lots for future projects. All I can tell you for sure is that it is A LOT of land and that little, if any, of it is mortgaged.

The Church does not usually disclose its properties or other financial information to the public, but if you would like to contact the Church administration and headquarters directly to see if they can give you further information, you can do so at:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
50 East North Temple
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150

or by calling (801) 240-1000

What happens in the temple when a Mormon couple get married?

When a Mormon couple gets married in the temple they first go in to the office and sign the marriage license and certificate, and fill out some paperwork.

They then go into locker rooms to change into their white clothing. In most temples there is a special room only for brides where the bride can have a special place to change into her wedding dress with the help of her mom or other female escort. She needs to have her hair and makeup done ahead of time.

After the couple have changed, the sealer (the person performing the marriage) often meets with them privately for a few minutes just to discuss what the ceremony is going to be like, and leads them into the sealing room where family and friends are waiting.

Usually there is only a small group of their closest friends and there, as the largest sealing room in the Temple holds only about 70 people, but most hold about 20.

There is an altar in the middle of the room, chairs for guests on either side, chairs for the sealer and two witnesses on one side, and two chairs for the bride and groom on the other. Usually there are mirrors on opposite walls in the sealing room, so when they couple looks into them, they can "see into eternity". They will sit on their chairs while the sealer gives them some marriage advice, and then they will kneel at the altar while the sealer performs the sealing. He will then introduce the couple to the guests as man and wife and give everyone an opportunity to congratulate them.

The couple then goes back to their dressing rooms to change into the clothes they are going wear as they exit the Temple for photos. (In the temple, the bride must wear a long sleeve white dress and the groom white pants and long sleeve white shirt, so often couples will have a second dress, tux etc. for outside the temple). Most couples then go outside the temple to get wedding photos taken with their family and friends, as photography is not allowed inside the temple.

See the related links below to see photos of a temple Brides Room and a Sealing Room, as well as a typical wedding photo.

How long is a Mormon service for the deceased?

This is entirely up to the wishes of the individual or the family. Some might wish to have a short funeral and some may wish to have a long one.

A pretty typical Mormon funeral would be as follows:

Viewing: This is usually an open-house type format and is held for a few hours before the main service. This enables you to give your personal condolences to the family or to say your goodbyes to the deceased.

Funeral Service: This is usually about an hour, although it could be shorter or longer. It would consist of prayers, hymns, eulogies from friends and family, and possibly a short sermon from a church leader.

Grave Dedication: The funeral party usually travels to the cemetery where a short grave dedication ceremony is held (expect about 15-30 minutes).

Luncheon: It is common that the local Mormon congregation will provide lunch or dinner for the mourners immediately following the funeral. This is usually quite casual and you can leave when you like.

It is not expected that everyone will attend all four of these events, although you may if you wish. Most who are not close family or friends attend just the main funeral service or stop in during the viewing to greet the family.

Customs vary in other areas of the world, but this format is pretty common among Mormon funerals in the US, Canada, and Europe.

Is Bill Gates a Mormon?

Can a christian girl marry a Mormon boy?

This should not even be a question. If you love one another, then it is stupid for anything to stop you! Religion is both lies and truth. You never know which is which though. If God loves us all, why would he separate us and give us boundaries to our lives which we were allowed the right to control?.

Why are Mormons right?

Whether or not the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) is right or wrong is a matter of opinion, so you will have to decide for yourself. Most Mormons believe that the Church is correct because they have felt the Holy Spirit confirm to their hearts that the doctrines they are being taught are true. All Mormons are required to develop this personal testimony before being baptized into Church membership. They ask that you do the same - learn of their doctrines and ask God if it is true. Mormons want everyone to discover for themselves if they are right or wrong.

If you want to learn the basic doctrines and beliefs of Mormons and form your own opinion, visit the "Related Links" below.

Did Jesus found the church?

AnswerThe church, recognized in the bible as "the church" was already in existence since it was started by Jesus himself. Paul mentions this fact numerous times. The word Catholic, from the Greek translation, means "Universal" and was used to describe the church in writings as early as 46AD. The Term Roman Catholic is simply a westerners term used to describe the fact that Catholics look to Rome as the head of the church. There is nothing in writing or from the Vatican that names the Catholic church "Roman Catholic. The bible was not even produced until the first Nicaean Council in 325AD. But by then, the Catholic/Christian church was well established and growing throughout the world. The church was the only Christian church until Martin Luther started Lutherism in 1517AD. Shortly after that, John Calvin founded Calvinism in 1536. Lutheran and Methodists both stem from the original break from the Catholic Church. 90% of the other Protestant churches were splits from the Calvanist. Martin Luther's main question/objection to the teachings of the church was "sola scriptora" meaning "scripture alone". He believed, like most protestants today, that the bible is our only source for what we need to believe. Unfortunately, this mistake is due to a lack of scripture knowledge. Jesus told his disciples to go forth and teach all the nations. He did not say, sit down and write a book and that should do it. John stated that if they were to try and record all that Jesus did and taught, the world would not be able to contain all the books. The church recognized that there was a lot of teachings both verbal and traditional in reverence that were passed down to the next generation. That is why it was difficult to decide on which books would be included in the bible and which would not. Our final version was agreed upon because it contained most of the teachings that the church believed should be recorded. Again however, the church was well established long before the bible although the Catholic church adheres to the original writings of scripture without question more than any other Christian religion and has continued with the same teachings for almost 2000 years.

Does the reconized ladder day saints practice polygamy?

Are you referring to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the largest of the above, but changed its name to "Community of Christ" in 2001, and therefore is no longer referred to as "RLDS". They do not practice polygamy and often deny that Joseph Smith taught or practiced the doctrine.

The Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a smaller group that broke off from the Community of Christ in 1991. They do not practice polygamy either.

The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is another small group which broke off of the Community of Christ. Their origins are in the year 2000. They do not practice polygamy.

Don't get the above confused with the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ, which broke off from the main body, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are known for their open practice of homosexuality, and at least a handful of members are in openly homosexual polygamous relationships.

It is the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), not the RLDS that is known for its practice of polygamy.

Do Mormons believe in the Virgin Mary?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") believe that Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ. They do not worship her or pray to her, but consider her a virtuous woman of humble obedience and faith, and a "precious and chosen vessel" (Book of Mormon, Alma 7:10).

The Encyclopedia of Mormonism says, "Doctrinally, Latter Day Saints do not view Mary as the intercessor with her son in behalf of those who pray, and they do not pray to her. They affirm the Virgin Birth but reject the traditions of the Immaculate Conception, of Mary's perpetual virginity, and of her "assumption". Mary, like all mortals, returns to God the Father only through the atonement of her son, Jesus Christ."

To see further information from the Church regarding it's teachings about Mary the mother of Jesus, see the "Related Links" below.
