First of all, before deciding what kind of doctor you will be, you have to get into medical school. This just requires an undergrad degree. Your undergrad (college) degree can be in anything you want as long as you take the required science classes while in college. I believe this is 2 semesters each of chemistry, biology, calculus, organic chemistry, physics, and english. So as long as you have those classes you could do anything in college (psychology, drama, history, biology, biochemistry, english, math, etc). However, majoring in a science field especially biology will prepare you better for medical school than some other majors. You'll also have to take a test called the MCAT (medical college admission test) which covers biology, physics, chemistry, reading comprehension, and writing. This is a national test taken be all prospective medical students while in college.

Once you get into medical school then you decide what kind of doctor you want to be. In your fourth and final year of medical school you apply to a residency program. This determines what kind of doctor you will be one day. If you do a residency in obstetrics and gynecology you will have a 4 year reasidency and upon completion of that you can be an obstetrician.

You need an undergraduate degree, which is a bachelors degree, which is 4 years of school. You want something in the field of science [ie: chemistry, biology, or any of the sub-levels of those categories]. After that, you must apply to medical school, which should be about 2 years of classroom work, followed by a residency, which can take up to 4 years. All in all, about 10 years of school, is that a straight-forward enough answer?
