What type of water is used in Olympic pools?

a straight Chlorine pool is easy and does not cost much to start with.

Salt (Sodium chloride) water pools are also chlorine pools but they use the salt in the pool to make chlorine using an electrode designed to do that job. however the water can not be reused when back washing the filtration system.

Salt (Magnesium chloride and potassium chloride) work like a normal salt pool only the salt is not harmful and can be beneficial to swimmers as well as the back wash being good for plants in the yard so no water need go to waste.

Ozone requires special equipment but is reputed to be a very good sanitation method without the irritating effects of chlorine.

Olympic swimming pools are kept at temperatures typically around 77-79 degrees Fahrenheit or around 25-26.1 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature can go up to 82 degrees Fahrenheit or 27.7 degrees Celsius and be acceptable to FINA, the organization overseeing Olympic swimming.

FINA's optimal temperatures for water polo are 79 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius; for synchronized swimming, 81 Fahrenheit or 27 Celsius; and for diving, not under 79 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius.

What are the different floating techniques in swimming?

All Afloat

There are two basic floating techniques in swimming:

  1. The basic back float (also known as the back "star" float). Lie on your back in the water. While maintaining a "flat" horizontal position, extend your legs out and make a large "V" with them, then stretch your arms out to the sides, making a "T" with them. Ensure that your arms and legs are staying in the water. Tilt your head backwards, and push your stomach up, as if an invisible string is attached to your navel and is pulling you up towards the sky.

Making sure your stomach is pushed upwards is absolutely key to maintaining a floating position. If you let your stomach and pelvis sink down, you will sink to the bottom. If you are working with a child, I find telling them to make a "big Santa Clause belly" helpful, and telling them to try to look like Patrick on Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob."

  2. The basic front float (also known as the front "star" float). Lie on your front in the water. While maintaining a "flat" horizontal position, extend your legs out and make a large "V" with them, then stretch your arms out to the sides, making a "T" with them. Ensure that your arms and legs are staying in the water. Put your face in the water (but make sure you remember to breathe when you need to!). If you are worried that you will get water in your nose, exhale through your nose while doing your front float.

Note:

Keep in mind that due to body type and shape, not everyone will float the same way. People who have a lower density (due to having more fat in their body), are more likely to float at the surface of the water. And people who are very thin or very muscular are likely to float lower in the water. This is why women tend to float better than men: Men naturally have a leaner body shape and women are naturally curvier because we have breasts and wider hips. Remember that floating does not constitute that one is necessarily at the surface, rather that one is suspended in water at a constant level.

Why is the middle lane better for swimming?

middle lane it can be anything 4 5 6 then 5 would be the middle laneAnswerWhile training, it is a good idea to put fastest swimmers in a lane at on outside lane, and have the slowest in the outside lane at the opposite side of the pool (i.e. in a 6 lane pool, lane 1 is fast and lane 6 is slow, or visa versa (depends on the coach)). If your team includes very inexperienced swimmers, they may get both outside lanes so that they may have the comfort of the wall to grab onto. Also, most more experienced swimmers would rather not swim near the wall for space reasons and the choppiness of waves bouncing off the wall.

However, in a swim meet, the fastest swimmer is always in the middle lane, lanes 3 or 4 if it is 6 lane pool, lanes 4 or 5 if it is an 8 lane pool, then slightly slower swimmers on either side of the fastest seeded swimmer as to create a v formation during the meet (a little more exciting to watch in a meet).

I am a competative swimmer, and i only know several different types of training, but in meets i know that is fairly standard. Other training techniques by other people may stray from the training lane assignments i told above, but that is usually how my coaches have had swimming set up.

the reason is so that all the swimmers can see the fastest person. If the fastest were to be in an outside lane, they could only be seen by the person next to them.

What kind of diet does a olympic swimmer eat?

Yeah diet makes a big difference.

Cut down on foods high in fat. (i.e. fast food). Protein is good for building muscle for sprinters. Complex carbohydrates work for distance. Don't drink a lot of pop.

Swimmers should consume from 60-70% of daily calories in carb-rich foods.

Limit intake of fat to 15-20% of daily calories, or less than 80 grams. Recommended daily protein is 20-25% of total calories. Take vitamins A, C and E.

How long is a swimmer's 500M race?

20 lengths of a 25 meter pool, or 10 lengths of a 50 meter pool. Some people refer to a lap as one pool length, while others refer to a lap as down and back (2 lengths). I haven't found which one is the correct terminology, but the term length has only one meaning (for the particular pool that you are using).

What is the temperature of the pool water in international swimming competitions such as the Olympics?

From Wikipieda...

An Olympic sized swimming pool (first used at the 1924 Olympics) is a pool that meets FINA's additional standards for the Olympic Games and for world championship events. It must be 50 m (~164 feet) in length by 25 m (~82 feet) wide, divided into eight lanes of 2.5 m (~8.2 feet) each plus two areas of 2.5 m (~8.2 feet) at each side of the pool. The water must be kept at 25-28°C (77-82.4°F) and the lighting level at greater than 1500 lux.

How long is a lap in Olympic swim meet?

A lap can be either 25 meters or 50 meters. In the Olympics and major National events the swim 'long course' which means the pool is 50 meters in length. However, there are still short course swim meets and the pool is only 25 meters. If you are talking about a track lap, it is 400meters! 25 METERS IT NOT THAT LONG. BUT WHEN YOU GET INTO IT YOU GET USED TO DOING MORE LAPS!!!

Why do olympic swimmers appear to have no breast?

Physiologically speaking, any non-streamlined physical attribute creates drag which slows a swimmer down. Drag is created from body features as small as body hair and ears all the way to the size of breasts. To counteract this, both male and female swimmers shave their body hair, wear swimcaps, and wear lightweight swimsuits and underthings that compress and streamline their bodies.

The larger a woman's breasts, the more drag is created while swimming. On the world competitive stage, women with naturally smaller breasts are able to swim faster than their larger-breasted counterparts. Sometimes women are able to tape their chests down to minimize drag and still compete. However, the advantage goes to women with small or no breasts.

This is why women swimmers appear to have small or no breasts.
