No, I don't think so but in some cases they cut off the tail because there's an infection and they don't want the infection to spread. With Collie and Aussies they cut off the tail when they are born. Also some dogs are born with short tails. But I personally think that you can ask your vet; he/she would be very happy to answer.

No, there isn't any visible shedding you will see, their fur does fall out but is so curly that it falls back into their fur that's why they need brushing every other day or they will get matted and tangled.

A Shih Tzu is a toy breed dog. By AKC standards they reach around 8-11 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 9-16 pounds. They were a favorite of the Chinese Emperors, who had them bred as companion dogs. They come from the mixing of the Pekingnese and the Lhapso Apso. A unique characteristic of this dog is that is doesn't have fur, it has hypo-allergenic hair so it doesn't shed. This hair grows faster than fur so you have to cut it more often (if you want shorter hair you'll have to cut it every 1-2 months depending on the temperature and on how long you want to allow it to grow). Note that as with human hair the hair of Shih Tzu's tends to get dirty easily and can tangle easily. If you want your Shih Tzu to have long hair it needs to be combed at least once a day. Shih Tzu's are low-riders. Their frame is similar to that of a Chow Chow. Their legs are sturdy, but short. They have bulky bodies. But don't let this fool you - they are extremely fast runners. Like any dog, upbringing and training affect it's personality. Shih Tzu's can be good around kids, but they must be brought up with kids. Though note that Shih Tzu's can be moody at times. Shih Tzu's are a very strong-willed and independent breed. They are known to be hard to train at times. The medical term is nuclear sclerosis and does not affect the eyesight terribly; dogs see as if looking through a pair of dirty glasses. With true cataracts, vision is greatly affected. It can strike at any age but it is not a common condition. Cataracts are typically inherited or can be a sign of another disease such as diabetes.

Observe your dog to see if she is running into things or suddenly does not want to climb stairs or jump on things she normally had in the past--this can mean she is having trouble seeing. She also may begin squinting her eyes, which can also be a sign she is struggling to see.

Inspect your dog's eyes in bright lighting such as a florescent or in midday light. If you notice a bluish, white or gray color, it could be cataracts, particularly in a younger dog. Redness or inflammation in the eyes can also be a sign of cataracts.

Take your dog to your veterinarian if you notice any signs of cataracts. Unfortunately, there is no cure to completely restore the lost vision. Your vet can remove the cataracts, but vision will still be impaired. Your dog can live a full life even with impaired vision, just as people do. The key is to keep things in his environment the same as much as possible; moving furniture can cause a lot of unneeded stress. When you move furniture or you introduce new pieces, lead your dog to it so he can adjust to where it is located.

It's best to let a dog groomer do this task on a Poodle. If they are not groomed properly they can certainly lose their looks. Poodles are one dog that many people admire and are also extremely intelligent. Shop around and get different prices on groomers. I have a groomer come to my home and I own a Bichon Frise and a Cockapoo and she charges $35 to $50 for both dogs depending on how much hair she has to cut off. This also includes nail cutting, ear cleaning and expressing my Bichon's anal glands. She does a terrific job and it's so convenience and less traumatic for my dogs to be groomed in our home. I bath them the night before and brush them well before the dog groomer comes over.
