When did the Catholic church introduce celebacy for priests?

The idea of clerical celibacy traces back to the beginnings of Christianity: "Celibacy is represented in the Roman Catholic Church as having apostolic authority. Theologically, the Church desires to imitate the life of Jesus with regard to chastity and the sacrifice of married life for the "sake of the Kingdom" (Luke 18:28-30, Mattew 19:27-30; Mark 10:20-21), and to follow the example of Jesus Christ in being "married" to the Church, viewed by Catholicism and many Christian traditions as the "Bride of Christ". Also of importance are the teachings of St. Paul, that chastity is the superior state of life, and his desire expressed in I Corintians 7:7-8, 'I would that all men were even as myself [celibate] - but every one has his proper gift from God; one after this manner, and another after that. But I say to the unmarried and the widows. It is good for them if they so continue, even as I.'" (Wikipedia, links removed, emphasis added) Background: Clerical Celibacy in the Catholic Church "Clerical celibacy is the discipline by which, in some of the particular churches that constitute the Catholic Church, only unmarried men are, as a rule, to be ordained to the priesthood. The same discipline holds in some other Churches for ordination to the episcopate. Chief of the Catholic particular Churches that follow this discipline is the Latin Rite, but, among the Eastern Catholic Churches, at least the Ethiopic Catholic Church applies it also. In this context, "celibacy" retains its original meaning of "unmarried", and does not refer to the continence or abstinence from sexual intercourse that even the married may practise. Throughout the Catholic Church, East as well as West, a priest may not marry. To become a married priest, one must therefore marry before being ordained. The Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches, without exception, rule out ordination of married men to the episcopate. The law of clerical celibacy is considered to be not a doctrine, but a discipline. Exceptions are sometimes made, especially in the case of Protestant clergymen who convert to the Catholic Church, and the discipline could in theory be changed for all ordinations to the priesthood. However, it is considered a valuable witness of Christian faith and as a way of following the example of Christ and his celibate way of life." (Wikipedia, links removed)

In most juristictions and synods, they may. In some small Lutheran synods, bishops may not, while priests/pastors and deacons/deaconesses may. Lutheran clergy who are not married are bound to celibacy. Those who believe they have the gift of celibacy, sometimes take a vow of celibacy to devote their entire life to evangelism and charitable work. This is most common in deaconess communites and amongst Lutheran monastics.

Was Moses a priest?

Yes. After Moses (peace be upon him) escaped from Pharaohs palace, he married Tzipora - Jethro's daughter - and shepherded his sheep. Read about it in Exodus Ch. 2 and 3 JoJmnz144: He settled down with his family in the land of his father-in-law, Medea. It is across from the Sinai Peninsula in what is now Saudi Arabia, just south Eilat. They actually cross the Gulf of Aqaba. Although I am not challenging the entire answer, the correct spelling of Moses' wife name is "Zipporah", and she and her father were from the land of "Midian".

Why don't Catholic priests get married?

It can be seen from two aspects - Political and Religious:

Political - the bishop of Rome as he was called then did not want the priests family inheriting his wealth so by letting priests not get married this was solved.

Religious - that the priest is married to the Church, and should be at her disposal at all times.

However, eastern rite catholic churches who are schismatics form the orthodox church and keep the traditions and beliefs of the orthodox church but accept the primacy of the pope over the orthodox church can get married.

Clergy members of other churches that were already married and convert to Catholicism can still stay married.

This however is rejected by the orthodox church putting it in simplistic terms is that because it can led to other sins such as homosexuality, masturbation, adultery, etc...

Another Answer:

The tradition of priestly celibacy is only mandatory in the Roman (Latin) Rite of the Catholic Church. There are numerous other rites within Catholicism that are in full communion with the Bishop of Rome and are thus Catholic. Some of these other rites allow married men to enter the priesthood. After their ordination however they are not allowed to marry.

For a list of the rites of the Catholic Church see the link below.

In Catholicism, it has to do with tradition. In the Latin Rite, the Church has a tradition of not allowing married men into the priesthood. There are certain exceptions to the tradition, if a married and ordained Anglican or Lutheran priest wants to minister in the Catholic Church, then he will be allowed to remain married and be ordained a Catholic Priest.

It is the tradition of the other "Eastern" rites to allow married men into the priesthood. Though once a person is a priest they cannot marry, in any rite, unless they leave the priesthood. Though it is very uncommon in the United States, especially because many believe that Catholic priests can't be married at all.

Answer In the early days of the Catholic Church, the leaders ended the practice of priests marrying in order to stop the property, money and land of the church from being "inherited" away from the church. That is, from priests leaving money and land to wives and children when they died. If a priest was never married, then he had no family to leave anything to, therefore all the wealth accumulated by the church would stay in the Church.

Answer Catholic priests aren't allowed to be married because they are to be celibate- (abstain from sex)

Answer They are married to God!

In the Orthodox faith, priests can be married BEFORE they are ordained, but not afterward. Bishops must remain celibate.

Catholic Answer Priests have not been allowed to marry for the entire history of the Church. In certain eras of the Church's history there has been some abuse of this and that is why the regulations named above were later put into effect. But there is ample evidence from the very first centuries that priests were never allowed to marry in the Latin Rite. In the Latin Rite, to be ordained to the diaconate and priesthood, men must take a vow of celibacy, which is a solemn promise to God that they will not attempt marriage. Priests are "another Christ" and thus are trying to live the life that He did as perfectly as possible. One of the things that they give up "for the kingdom" is a normal married life. This is a discipline of the Church, not a doctrine, and it is freely entered into by any man that is seeking ordination in the Church. In some rare instances, a man may already married when he is ordained, or in the eastern Rites, he is allowed to be married before he is ordained. However, all priests take a vow of celibacy upon ordination and if he is already married, he may not remarry if his wife dies.

Answer:

Although Catholic priests of the Eastern Rites may be married before they are ordained, if they are unmarried at ordination they may not marry afterwards; this is the Eastern tradition which is also held by the Orthodox. Married Latin (Roman) Catholic men cannot become priests, as the Latin branch of the Catholic Church requires celibacy as a sign of total dedication to Christ and His people. However, by way of exception, if a married Protestant or Anglican clergyman joins a (Roman) Catholic he can become a Catholic priest while still being married; however, when his wife dies he may not remarry. His wife must give approval for her husband to become a Catholic priest.

Can a priest resign?

Answer: Although a small minority of priests simply leave their parish or religious congregation, the vast majority of priests who wish to leave the active ministry normally approach the bishop or religious superior to discuss the matter. There are two basic approaches: 1) If the priest wishes to leave in order to be married, a petition is drawn up and sent to the appropriate congregation in the Vatican. Contrary to common opinion, it is not necessary for the pope himself to grant approval. 2) If a priest wishes to leave for a reason other than marriage, the normal procedure is to grant a leave of absence for one year, with the option of extending for a limited period. After this period, the priest is expected to decide one way or the other. If he decides to leave, then a formal petition is drawn up and sent to the curia. It is unknown how many priests leave and never submit a formal petition. In June 2009 it was announced that bishops will be permitted to remove from office any priest who has abandoned the active ministry for a period of more than five years. The bishop will then forward his decision to the Vatican for confirmation. Cases involving sexual abuse must still be sent to the Vatican for processing. When a priest receives his dispensation, he is free to marry. However, due to Catholic teaching, he remains a priest and may - and indeed is bound - to hear the confession of anyone who is dying or in danger of death, and to offer absolution.
