Do you think A Midsummer Night's Dream is a typical Shakespearean comedy?

I know i think that's it's actually very typical. Shakespeare has a style of somewhat serious, yet extremely funny plays. However, i do think that throughout this play in particular the fairies are somewhat unusual and the fact that Bottom is turned into a donkey is somewhat unusual too....but again i think it is kinda typical. Still has to do with love and hate like most of his plays do.

What are some clumsy falls examples such as the slapstick comedy on sitcoms?

The one that cracks me up every time I see it it Cosmo Kramer's knocking his head against a wall right in front of him while standing on a chair - it's in 100 Best Scenes on the last SEINFELD DVD (season 9) of the series, and of course George Costanza's fall after rushing from the toilet to intercept a telephone call for his bogus company Vandelay Enterprises in order to keep receiving his Unemployment Benefit. Seinfeld comments: "And that man wants to be my Latex Rep!".

Are there any forms of comedy that are virtually universal?

Universal comedy centers on things you would be frightened or embarrassed to have happen to you. When you see someone else looking ridiculous, you flood with relief and laughter, because it's not happening to you!

Physical comedy (slap-stick): People falling down, bumping into each other, knocking things over, having their skirt or pants fall down, having a wig fall off, stepping into wet cement or animal feces, getting soup spilled over them, etc.

Bodily functions and reactions: Showing exaggerated fear. Appearing to be extremely drunk. Inappropriate belching or farting. All mentions of urinating or defecating or of urine or feces.

Sex: Practically any reference to intercourse, masturbation, male inadequacy or husbands being fooled.

Anxiety: Many variations of sneaking around and nearly getting caught by an angry husband, wife, girl's father, bully, etc. People hiding in closets, climbing out windows. Two people just missing each other as they step in and out of different rooms.

Ridicule: (These have always had appeal but in civilized societies they are no longer acceptable.) Jokes about how dumb people in other ethnic groups are. Exaggerating the accent or habits of immigrants or minorities. Making fun of people for being too short, too fat, too old or for having a disability.

Another view:

I'm not sure if the above is just a standard definition or the contributor's opinion. The above list are types of things that don't amuse me. I know quite a number of people that view them as I do, lame, without effort, and predictable. Does that negate the definition of 'universal'? Or, perhaps 'universal' means 'mostly'.

I do admit that when I was younger, perhaps in my teens, those situations would make me laugh, and I do still find the humor in Charlie Caplin, Lucy, Carol Burnett, and the like. But the personality of the actor has a lot to do with why it's funny, not just the pratfall.

I seek out humor that challenges the wit and takes you by surprise.

Who were jeb and cousin easy of the comedy team of the same name?

Jeb was Calvin Nelson born 1907 in Osage, Oklahoma, son of William Nelson (of Kansas). His stage name originally was Zeb while he worked with Mandy. Later, he would partner with Viriginia Ann Robinson, born 1931 in Conroe, Texas, who would become known as Cousin Easy. Zeb became Jeb when the cursive Z of Virginia's handwriting was thought to be a J. After the printing, it was decided not to recall the records so Jeb stood. The couple traveled throughout the south and west, and in particular, followed the rodeo circuit. In addition to comedy, Easy played the bass and sang. Zeb was adept at close magic and playing the guitar. Their comedy was based upon vaudeville acts. Zeb passed in his sleep in Prairieville, La, in a cabin on the Little Amit River. Virginia still lives in Baton Rouge, LA.

Comment on the alchemist as a comedy of humours?

The comedy of humours pertains to a genre of dramatic comedy that focuses on one or many eccentric characters, each of whom has one overriding trait or 'humour' that dominates their personality and obssesses their mind. The comedy of humours was one of Jonson's major innovations. The Alchemist is basically a comedy of humours even though it does not contain such a variety of humours as in Jonson's earlier play, Every man in His Humour. In The Alchemist, Jonson concentrates mainly on greed which is the humour that dominates almost every character. Besides, the play presents lust as a humour through the character of Mammon. Hence, through a discussion of The Alchemist as a comedy of humours, I will also show how Jonson uses ridicule to teach people to keep their humours in check.

In The Alchemist, the humour of greed is presented as endemic in society - almost all the characters display it. Subtle uses his excellent knowledge of alchemy in learned, scientific speech to fool people and amass money. Face goes about in order to "shark" foolish people like Drugger and Dapper, and Dol joins the two to rob people of as much money as possible. Those three conspirators are in fact the greediest. It is this very avarice that brings them into conspiring with each other to gull other greedy people.

Every other character shows their greed through their gullibility. I feel that this avarice comes as a disease from which the characters suffer. They are so covetous that they become ridiculous in our eyes. It is because of this very humour of rapacity that they end up in becoming so gullible. In believing Subtle, they dream of acquring riches. Dapper, for example, wishes to give up his profession and become a whole-time gambler with the sole aim of acquiring riches:

"(…)He would have

(I told you of him) a familiar

To rifle with at horses, and win cups."

Finally, they all pay a heavy price due to their avarice.

What is screwball comedy?

AnswerDumb and Dumber is not at all a screwball comedy. A screwball comedy is a genre of comedy that had originated in Hollywood in the 1930's. It is very rare to see a modern screwball comedy as many writers tend to write most comedies in the slapstick format. It is often emphasized by quick funny dialogue and situations that are presented at breakneck speed. It usually has a male and female lead who are more often than not at odds at each other. Sometimes it borders on commentary on class and position of the characters (It Happened One Night.) Sometimes there is some cross-dressing involved (Some Like It Hot) which often furthers misunderstandings. It is often associated with slapstick, romantic comedy, and situation comedy.

SOMETHING SO FUNNY THAT IT IS STUPID. LIKE DUMB AND DUMBER

- I'm sorry, but I believe that Dumb and Dumber is considered slapstick. Slapstick is another genre of comedy where as the previous reviewer has said - "it's so funny, it is stupid." The term slapstick derives from the term batacchio or slapstick in English which makes a violent sound but does little if any harm to the person who is struck by it. Most comedies of that genre tend to border on ridiculous with exaggerated violence and situations that defy common sense. Elements that make a film slapstick: 1) pain without real consequence, 2) an unrealistic situation becomes impossible, 3) impossible situations, 4) zooming to confuse the audience, and 5) use of stunts that make no physical sense. This is what Dumb and Dumber or any Jim Carrey movie can be defined as.

What comedian did the why not bit?

There are two who I can come up with. One is Pat Paulson, who used "Why Not?" as a gag when he ran for president during the "Laugh-In years".

The other is guy who was around even before Pat Paulson. His name was Dayton Allen. You can find really old routines of his on Youtube. He was very popular at one time and had steady appearances on the Steve Allen Show. he was the voice of Deputy Dog (Dawg?) and also Heckle and Jeckle. He was also the voice of many Terrytoons characters. He had a later career in voiceovers and then real estate.
