What is the role of the lds prophet?

A very good question, one that is often misunderstood by those who are not members of the LDS faith.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that God calls prophets to lead His people today just as He did in ancient times. Prophets are essential to having the proper priesthood authority and keys upon the earth in order for the church of Jesus Christ to function correctly.

The prophet's role is to be the mortal head of the Church (Jesus Christ being the true head). He recieves revelation from God in behalf of the church or the world as a whole, and then delivers this revelation to the people. This revelation is counsel, warning, or reminders that God wishes His people to hear. The prophet's role is NOT to direct individuals or small groups except in the case of appointments to leadership positions or mission locations within the church. Mormons do not see the prophet as a 'go between' or 'mediator' between God and man. The Church's official topics and background site says this about the prophet: "Belief in prophets and apostles at the head of the Church does not mean that members blindly follow their leaders. While the prophet of God receives revelation and inspiration to guide the Church as a whole, revelation flows at every level, including to the leaders of congregations and to individual families and members. In fact, individual members are expected to seek that kind of divine guidance to help them in their own lives, in their responsibilities in the Church and even in temporal pursuits, including their occupations. Members are also expected to prayerfully seek their own "testimony" or conviction of the principles their leaders teach them."

Why can't a girl be a prophet?

A good question my friend and one that deserves some form of answer. Before anyone is called to be a prophet they must be wise in the ways of the Lord (God if you so choose). They must have reached an age where they have proved themselves worthy of such a high calling. All prophetess in scripture have been mature females i.e Deborah and Miriam. True there were or are some girls who do have a knowledge of the gospel, but to have the wisdom to warrent revelation from God to speak on His behalf is left to those who understand the importance of such a calling. Girls, though knowledgable in the gospel oftimes lack understanding, this comes with maturity.

I do hope that this has been of some help to you.

No, he was once asked this by his diciples:

"Who are you, anyway? Are you a god?"

"Are you a saint?" asked another.

"No," the prince replied.

"Are you a prophet?"

"No, not a prophet."

"Well, then," all the pilgrims cried at once, "who are you, then?"

And very calmly, the story goes, the Buddha replied: "I am awake."

Why did Habakuk stand on a tower to hear God's answer?

This is the account recorded at Habakkuk 2:1 "At my guardpost I will keep standing, And I will station myself on the rampart. I will keep watch to see what he will speak by means of me And what I will reply when I am reproved."

This was not a literal tower, but a spiritual tower.

Throughout history, mankind has utilized watchtowers with men who were stationed as "lookouts" to keep on the watch for dangers that might happen. They had to stay awake and then give warning of any impending nature.

Similarly, Habakkuk was assigned as a "spiritual" watchman, to give warning to anything that would endanger the Israelites. Another spiritual watchman was Ezekiel which was recorded at Ezekiel 3:17 "I appoint you a watchman to the house of Israel"

Greek word and meaning of prophet?

The Greek word is pro·phe′tes.

It literally means 'a speaker out' (pro = 'before' or 'in front of' // and phemi = 'say')

The fundamental meaning is NOT that of prediction; but merely describes one who proclaims, one who makes known messages attributed to a divine source. (Judges 6:7-10.)

Nevertheless, a prophet of God would have revealed to him, knowledge of future events, (either specific or general) as needed.

His assignment was to 'bring people back to Jehovah'; by leading the people in example, by teaching, and by explaining the consequences for non-compliance.

What are some examples of prophet?

Jacob, Elijah, Abraham, Adam & Eve, Joseph, Moses, and Isaiah are some prophets.
