Puerto Rico

This category covers questions about the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, commonly known as simply Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. Originally a Spanish colony, the United States acquired Puerto Rico as a territory from the Kingdom of Spain on December 10, 1898. Since then, both the United States and Puerto Rico have maintained close, friendly ties, even once considering the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st state, although this was eventually decided against.

What is the official status of Puerto Rico with the US?

Puerto Rican Americans or Baricua, as they call themselves, are originally from the island of Borinquén, subsequently called Puerto Rico, the native inhabitants are the Taino Indians, and they are Spanish and or English speaking. The island was seized by the United States in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. The value of Puerto Rico for the United States, as it was mainly its strategic location, which was advantageous for maritime trade. All power was given to the officials appointed by the president, and any act of the island's legislature could be overruled by Congress. Even the spelling was changed briefly to Porto Rico to suit North American pronunciation. English, previously unknown on the island, became the only language permitted in the school systems. The people were colonized- first politically, then culturally, and finally economically. Citizenship was extended to Puerto Ricans by the Jones Act of 1917, but Puerto Rico remained a colony. This political dependence altered in 1948, when Puerto Rico elected its own governor and became a commonwealth. Puerto Ricans are United States citizens and elect their own governor, they may not vote in presidential elections and have no voting representation in Congress.

Are Mexicans and Puerto Ricans the same?

No, Mexicans are usually natives mixed with Spaniards. Cubans are Blacks, Spaniards, some Indians(Taino or descendants) and some Asians too (specially from China ). Plus Cubans are in a different country than the Mexicans. But both would be considered "Latino" or "Hispanic" by most.

No again Mexicans are descendants of the Mayan or Aztec Indians, in some case Incas also . But yes some are mixed with Spaniards. Some Cubans are descendants of the Taino-Arawak Indians.. Cubans can also be mixed with Spaniards and some are black also because when the white people brought slaves from Africa to sell as slaves the lucky few ran away and settled in Cuba where they learned a different culture.

Cubans are 65.05% white, 10.08% pure black , 23.84% mulatto/mestizos and asians 1.02%.

Mulattos are white +black... Mestizos are Indians + white ... The Taino Indians of Cuba were NOT completely wiped out by the conquistadors . Some of them survived in the province Oriente, and some still use the language(Taino).. . Also, Cubans don't like to be called Hispanics or Latins cause Cubans are mainly Caribbean people...they identify more with the Caribbean culture than the culture of the rest of Latin America.

Puerto Rican's are better than Mexicans?

Mexicans are from Mayan or Aztec Indian decedents mixed with the Spaniards who colonized them in the 1400s as well as the African American Slaves that were brought to work for them.

Mexicans have a very characteristic melody when speaking, and often pronounce the stress on the second last syllable in many words. More commonly described as speaking as if they are singing.

Puerto Ricans are from Taino Indian decendants mixed with Spaniards who colonized them as well in the 1400s and again the African American Slaves.

Puerto Ricans having a stronger African American background with a hint for French their Spanish is a bit more broken. For example the Spanish word for car "carro" Puerto Ricans don't roll their r like most Spanish speaking countries, most Puerto Ricans tend to pronounce the double r as the French would or a Spanish j, as for the single r they tend to replace it with an l. They also tend to not use the letter sas much, it usually varies, depending on the word and its placement in the sentence.

Here's an example of how a Puerto Rican would pronounce these sentences:

Spanish "Ellos van al carro" "Ellos son Puertorriqueños"

English (they are going to the car) (They are Puerto Rican)

Puerto Rican Spanish "Ello van al cajo" "Ello son Pueltojiqueños"

this is not a proper answer, the people from dominican republic speak that way, not puertoricans, also it depends on the education the person has as well, and where they are from in the Island, like in the states all Americans do not speak proper English and they have diffrent accents from the states they are from and there backgrowns.

Who did the US purchase Puerto Rico from?

Puerto Rico was ceded to the US by Spain at the end of the Spanish American War. The US had invaded and occupied Puerto Rico before Spain ceded the island.
