Where does acid rain result from?

Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air.

Human activities are the main cause of acid rain. Over the past few decades, humans have released so many different chemicals into the air that they have changed the mix of gases in the atmosphere. Power plants release the majority of sulfur dioxide and much of the nitrogen oxides when they burn fossil fuels, such as coal, to produce electricity. In addition, the exhaust from cars, trucks, and buses releases nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide into the air. These pollutants cause acid rain.

Where do most precipitation falls on land into lakes and rivers into the oceanor in rain forests?

There are nearly 50 species of leafcutter ants, belonging to two genera. They are not all the same size. Furthermore, a typical colony comprises four castes of ants. From smallest to largest, they are the minims, the minors, the mediae and the majors. Soldiers are majors and the biggest can be up to 16 mm in length.

Which rainforest do sloths live in?

Are there rainforests in Australia?

Yes, there are rainforests in Australia, tropical, subtropical and temperate. The largest rainforests in Australia by far are the cool-temperate rainforests of Tasmania characterised by their cooler mountain climates. One particular Tasmanian rainforest is the second largest temperate rainforest in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere. The tropical rainforests of northern Queensland are some of the wettest places in the world despite the common belief that Australia is just a desert.

Australia has numerous rainforests. There are huge tracts of rainforest all along the eastern coast of Australia, following the Great Dividing Range south. Queensland is especially well known for its rainforests, from Cairns in the north and inland, right down through to the Gold Coast hinterland. The Northern Territory is home to numerous rainforests covering hundreds of hectares. Western Australia's Kimberley Region contains more than 1500 small scattered patches of rainforest.

Some of the better known rainforests are listed below, but these form just a small selection of the total.

  • Daintree National Park - North Queensland (where the rainforest meets the reef) This is arguably the oldest rainforest in the world.
  • Russell Falls - Mt Field National Park, Tasmania
  • Tara Bulga National Park - Strzelecki Ranges, Victoria
  • Florence Falls - Lichfield national Park, Northern Territory

Do leaf cutter ants build nests?

No But They Do Live In The Same Branch (Seprate Nests)

What are the 3 largest rainforests in the world?

The three largest rainforests in the world are the Amazon rainforest, the Congo rainforest, and the Valdivian temperate rain forest. This is closely followed by Daintree rainforest.

Will a person running in the rain to a given destination get less wet than a person walking?

Answer

It depends on the distance, speed and how heavy the rain is. There is a saturation point so if you walk two miles in torrential rain you will be saturated same as if you run it. The person running could arrive a second before it stops raining and the person walking would have dried off a bit by the time they arrive, in this case you would arrive drier by walking. If neither person is travelling long enough to saturate the person travelling slower will be more wet. If the runner gets there before reaching saturation - and it continues raining - then the walker will be wetter on arrival. The answer is: it depends!

[added]

in general, you don't come in contact with near as much rain when running vs walking.

Using a few generic values:
rain terminal velocity: 6.5 m/s, walking: .9 m/s, jogging: 1.8 m/s, person dimensions: 1.8x.61x.15m

and a generic formula for area of rain which you could come in contact with: A=(sqrt(walk^2 + rain^2)*width)*(depth + height) [ m^3 / s ]

this gives rate of exposure walking = 7.8 m^3/s, and running = 8.0 m^3/s

however, even though you are exposed to slightly more when running, this can also be offset if the person is running at close to a 75 degree tilt

also, (the defining factor) the slower walker is in the rain for twice the amount of time & therefore almost double the amount of rain

How many trees are planted for each tree cut down?

The figure is always changing from year to year, but worldwide more trees are planted than cut down. Most are parts of managed timberland, meaning they are grown for industrial use. (Paper and other tree products do not come from trees in the wilderness.) Tree products include lumber from wood, paper from wood scraps, fuel from bark, and all sorts of cleaning agents and gums from naturally occurring ingredients.

Around 11.5 billion trees are cut worldwide yearly. The US plants 2.3 billion tree seedlings yearly. In the US, planting exceeds harvesting by 31%. All three are rising figures.

What happen to the dead plant or animal material in the rainforest?

That tree will quickly rot and decompose over time. It actually takes less time for a tree to decompose in the rainforest than it would in the boreal forest because the climate is much more warmer and humid, which is ideal for fungi and bacteria to be active enough to quickly break down a fallen, dead tree.

What can people do to help Toucans?

Toucans live in the Amazon rainforest, and are primarily threatened by deforestation. There are several ways we can help them, as well as countless other species from the Amazon.

1. We can buy Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified paper and wood products. Unlike most paper and wood products, FSC Certified paper and wood products are harvested responsibly and sustainably, which means that they don't contribute to deforestation.

2. Buy shade grown coffee (if you drink coffee). A lot of coffee is grown in the same area as the Amazon. Shade grown coffee tastes best, but sun grown coffee has a higher yield, and therefor pays the farmers more. So they slash and burn the forest to make room for their plantations. However, shade grown coffee grows beneath the large jungle canopy, and then the people are using the land, so the jungle is protected.

3. Donate money to groups like the World Wildlife Fund that work to conserve endangered species.

Do rhinos live in the tropical rainforest?

What does tropical rainforest and temperate forest have in common?
