Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a British novelist, the son of a clerk in the navy pay office. Pre-50's Nat King Cole was a dominant influence on a young Ray Charles. Ray obviously dug the King's genre bending piano, as that would come to be a thing Ray was known for later in his career. Nat's style was all at once Jazz, Gospel and Blues and he had a lot of chops to spare. Nat's phrasing also was probably a big influence on Ray, as it was on countless other singers and horn players.

Ray Charles voice does not fit any 'classical' voice type. The best way I could describe his voice is as a baritenor. He had the tone and richness of a baritone but lacked the 'bass' notes even high baritones can sing. The incredible thing about his voice is his powerful belting ability, it is a musical technique. As well as the passionate nature of his voice. A lot of rock singers would be described as 'middle voices' such as the baritenor, because non-classical singers can sing however they want. Sometimes it is the ugliness, that is beautiful.

Also, at a time when black music was sometimes restricted from white top-40 stations, Charles was a "cross-over" artist. His music crossed over from the black (then called "Soul") charts to gain popularity with the white audience.
