Who invented the electric refrigerator?

The first known artificial refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow in 1748. See link below for further information regarding the history of refrigeration.

What is the need for the refrigerator?

The refrigerator is needed to keep food fresher for longer periods. This makes shopping and food preparation more convenient, and it does so at lower cost. The refrigerator is an almost mandatory home appliance. Perhaps the most valuable of any, including the stove or range. Previous to having electric refrigerators, people would buy blocks of ice for their refrigerators. Underground cellars were common for food storage before that, since the temperature would stay more or less constant. If there was a lake that would freeze over, ice would be cut in blocks and put into the cellars, lined with hay, which would help maintain the cool temperatures over the summer.

Is it safe to plug a refrigerator into a powerbar that is plugged into the outlet on my stove that's how my landlord has my refrigerator plugged in?

It may or may not be considered safe... As wiring regulations and codes vary from country to country its always best to ask a local licensed electrician to answer this.

Usually they are happy to give such advice free of charge, in the hope you will remember them next time you have some wiring or other electrical work to be done.

So there should not be any charge to you for such advice, especially if you say they need not make it an urgent callout. Call a local one on the phone and ask him/her if they can stop by to see your fridge next next time they are in your area, but to call you first, before they come, to be sure you are in.

A:

It is reasonably safe, depending on how much power your stove uses, and what the fuse is rated for.

A fridge on average uses anything between 75 and 175 Watts. It would be the same as plugging in one to three old fashioned light bulb on the same circuit.

Will you ruin your refrigerator if you transport it on its side?

I have done it several times, but for not more than 5 miles, and waited 2 hours at least prior to plugging in. I do not suggest this mode of transport.

How do refrigerator repairmen recover the refrigerant from sealed compressors There are no screw-on fittings The refrigerant is in pipes that are soldered shut?

They use a tap that makes a hole in the pipe. The tap also has a valve connected to it, sort of like the one on a bicycle tire, actually its exactly like it with a sharp metal pointy thing that pops a hole in the copper. Then they use gauges attached to a hose to suck it out with a reclaimer, a machine that sucks it out into a canister designed to hold refrigerant (really most of time they bleed it out into the air while your not looking).

Who is the inventor of the modern refrigerator?

carl von linde

John Gorrie. His basic principle is often used in refrigeration today such as cooling caused by the rapid expansion of gases.

Where is Hotpoint made?

I saw one today says made in Europe

_________________

Hotpoint is worldwide. There is I believe a vert large production unit in Canada.

The UK hosted much of the production. This was in Kimmel Park In North Wales (UK) until a while ago. There used to be a second factory in Llandudno Junction mid wales (UK), for many years and when that closed in the late 1990s some of the workers moved to Bodelwyddan. Indesit bought out the operation in the 1980's

There are two other Indesit bases in the UK, in Somerset and Peterborough, and claims to be the largest white goods company in the country.

GE refrigerator wall mount 1954 through 60?

What would you like to know? I moved back into my parents old house (modern style built '58-59) when they retired out of the state and I still "nurse" the old GE wall refrigerator (model LW-11P) to this day.

He wanted his food to stop going bad at night because it wasn't refrigerated (keep cold).......

Who invented the refrigerator?

Various mechanical refrigeration devices appeared over the years.

  • The first known artificial Refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow in 1748, and relied on the process explained by Michael Faraday, but it was not practical. It was big, bulky and took up too much room.
  • An American inventor named Oliver Evans invented a refrigerator in 1804. In 1834, Jacob Perkins invented the "Practical Version" that was a big hit.
  • Dr John Gorrie, a Scot, received a patent in 1851 for an ice-making machine.
  • Carl Paul Gottfried von Linde (1842-1934) developed refrigeration in Germany in 1876 . He set up a commercial company in 1879.
  • While the process of the invention of refrigeration actually began as early as the 1700s and many appliances got their start from those early ideas, the idea of the home refrigerator was started by a Frenchman named Marcel Audiffren. His idea and patents were puchased by the American Audiffren Refrigerating Machines Company and units were built in Fort Wayne Indiana by General Electric. They were the precursors to the Frigidaire. The first unit was sold in 1911 for about $1000.00.

How do you repair a freon leak in a refrigerator?

Get putty from Auto Zone or Wal Mart, Epoxy Gator and JB Weld Stick are the 2 common products to fix leaking. I came across this article, that guy used Permatex Proxy though: http://www.simonlee.net/blog/archives/918 But not sure if this kind of fixes will violate the local building code or insurance policy, I am not expert, but I know Putty does work.

Can you tap into cold line to fridge for ice maker to install a cold water dispenser for wine bar on opposite wall?

Yes, you can use brass fittings or the plastic fittings that snap onto to the plastic line. I like the snap on fittings.

How do you turn a compressor from a fridge into an air compressor?

Can't do it. The lubricant is mixed in with the refrigerant. Converted to air it would be running dry.

Will a bad cold control thermostat stop refrigerator from cooling?

Yes a bad cold control will not let the compresser come on to check bypass cold control if compresser comes on replace cold control.

Why is a fridge called a fridge?

Probably because it refers to the word " frigid" Which means, " very cold"

I think. Or just because it shorter to say than " refrigerator"

How did Jacob Perkins invent the mechanical refrigerator?

Jacob Perkins invented the mechanical refrigerator, but not with pure thought.

William Cullen was the one who came up with the idea, but his wasn't practical. Jacob was the one who made it work, and he got all the credit. William claimed that Jacob had stolen his idea, but in the end Jacob kept all credit for his patent.

Why is there a sheet of ice on the bottom inside of a frost free freezer?

freezerFrost free freezers perform a defrost cycle and any ice is melted and drains into the pan under the unit. If you have an ice sheet then the drain is probably plugged. this and the pan should be checked regularly. You can access the pan by pulling the bottom grille off.

I have now had two refrigerators with bottom roll-out freezers that had the drain hose from the internal defrost water catch pan plugged with lint like debris. They almost certainly came from the factory plugged. A possible alternative is that dust kittens get sucked into the drain tube when the refrigerator/freezer door is opened and the momentary suction pulls air into the drain tube. The internal catch pan/trough will be full of ice also and will take a long thaw time to clear.

My sisters' freezer had the problem and the mfr. admitted to a too small drain opening and provided a fix.
