Is seroquel approved for elderly dementia related psychosis patients if doctor answers please state medical qualifications thank you?

Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic commonly used in patients with dementia and behavior problems or dementia and psychosis. However, just because it is commonly used does not mean that this use is "approved." But the fact that it is not "approved" does not mean that the use of it represents poor medical care.

To give you a more specific answer, "approved" usually means FDA approved for a particular indication. There are no atypical antipsychotics approved by the FDA for patients with dementia and psychosis. All use of atypical antipsychotics in this patient population is "off-label." All atypical antipsychotics have black-box warnings concerning increased mortality for patients with dementia and psychosis.

Studies have indicated that Seroquel has a somewhat lower rate of cardiac events associated with its use in patients with dementias and psychosis than do other atypical antipsychotics. However the black-box warning applies to the entire class of atypical antipsychotics.

Does Strattera seem like a good match with Seroquel for a 10-year-old boy with ADD?

Answer

Strattera is an ADHD med. Seroquel may possibly be used to treat hyperactivity but using it on children is highly questionable. Seroquel in high doses is used to treat psychosis and manic episodes. Low doses of Seroquel have been used on adults to treat anxiety and as a sleep aid.

Is it safe to mix Adderall XR and seroquel?

The combination is perfectly safe - to put it very simply, Adderall and Seroquel are sort of like polar opposites - Adderall is an amphetamine, which acts as a stimulant by increasing the amount of Dopamine in the brain, whereas Seroquel functions to decrease the amount of Dopamine floating around in the brain. That's the super simplified version.

The expanded version:

Although it's a safe combination, it might not be a very effective combination, depending on your reason for using these drugs.

For AD/HD, the combination is fine, I will not go into details, but let's just say even though Seroquel is a 'downer' and Adderall an 'upper', the mechanism whereby Adderall supposedly produces its anti-ADD effect has to do with another sector, if you will, of Dopamine receptor sites, than the one which Seroquel acts upon to exert an anti-dopamine action. So you can take both for AD/HD, although some doctors will still not recommend it, since the exact mechanism whereby amphetamines manage AD/HD is not exactly understood, and since Seroquel is a downer which can be used to totally get rid of the stimulating effect of amphetamine, it is rational to assume that perhaps, taking Seroquel with Adderall at the same time, might not be a good idea, because Adderall will not act as a stimulant in this mix, and stimulation, according to many doctors, is essential to ADHD management and concentration...which Seroquel inhibits very effectively. Thus, my opinion is, the two drugs should NOT be taken together, because they basically cancel one another out, however I am not a doctor, I'm just someone who has tried this combination and found it to be completely ridiculous for reasons mentioned above. But everyone is different, and many doctors will disagree without knowing why, so keep that in mind.

If the Adderall is being taken for its CNS stimulating properties, as in narcolepsy management, or for its anorectic properties.....Seroquel should not be taken in this case, as both wakefulness-promoting and anorectic qualities of the amphetamine will completely be lost.

Why would parents give their children Seroquel just for going through the teenage phase and why would they lie to them about it anf tell them Seroquel is a sleeping pill or headache relief medicine?

== == When parents give you medicine to numb you from reality it is because they do not know how to deal with teenagers and have forgotten how hard it is. It doesn't mean they don't care about you it just means that they are scared and don't know what to say to you. But I'll tell you from experience, when you are at that age and starting prescription drugs it can only lead to addictions. The best thing to do is work out your problem while being drug free, and although seroquel is not a narcotic, it is still a routine drug which will assist in you building a habit of taking pills to make you feel better. The only way for you to get better is to help yourself and do things that make you happy. Teenage years are hard for everyone but it does end and everyone will become a different person. If you don't do things to make your happy without drugs now then you will be dependent on them the rest of your life. I take Seroquel, and it's no biggie, it helps me go to sleep and also helps with my autism. Seroquel can be used to treat many disorders, IE. bipolar, autism, ADD, not just schizophrenia, for some it even helps combat abusive behavior like alcoholism, drug addiction. It helps much with anxiety, that's why I take it. Regarding the cognitive effects of seroquel, I always take 2000 mg of Taurine which helps me concentrate, a multivitamin, and make sure to eat when you feel hunger, as Seroquel often makes you loose your ability to determine when you're hungry, so you have to remind yourself to eat. Some people notice some type of cognitive impairment, like slow thinking, that's because of the sedative effects of Seroquel, but notice that if you time your REM sleep and wake yourself at 8 hours, you can control this and not over sleep the 12-18 hours that some people will feel. I use a super loud alarm clock, and take 1 cup of gunpowder green tea to wake up, followed by a cold shower. Once you ingest the caffeine coupled with the metabolic enhancement of the green tea, then you will feel awake. Another thing that helps is to take an Emergen-C Vitamin C supplement with 1000 mg of Vitamin C, that will get you energized. Just don't overdo the caffeine cause it will elute all your vitamins and will lower your blood pressure and remember Seroquel already will lower your blood pressure somewhat. So, make sure to eat salt, or keep some pickles handy, as the pickle juice is the perfect osmolarity for your blood. I strongly recommend a folic acid supplement, this helps even out blood pressure, and also eat two bananas a day, that helps too. I like Seroquel, however, personally if I were not in the US, I would be taking Amisulpride. Amisulpride gives you all the benefits of Seroquel without the excessive sleeping stuff. Amisulpride is only available in Europe, Canada, and Japan, but it's a much better medication! I should mention that I take Seroquel due my inability to sleep, and or nightmares, I have Asperger's and OCD. I should mention that high dosages of Seroquel make OCD worse, which is why I stopped taking it. I would recommend Piracetam, I take that now, as well as a multivitamin. Note that I do have an Asperger's-OCD diagnosis. Seroquel combats the symptoms of schizophrenia, a mental disorder marked by delusions, hallucinations, disrupted thinking, and loss of contact with reality. It is the first in a new class of anti psychotic medications. Researchers believe that it works by diminishing the action of dopamine and serotonin, two of the brain's chief chemical messengers. It can also be used for bi-polar. Your parents would not be able to obtain this with out a script from your doctor. You must show some signs of schizophrenia or bi-polar. It is best to start treating it and keep it treated because if not then you may become worse, and you could end up doing things that you will undoubtedly regret. The other poster is correct, but I would like to add that your parents love you a great deal and are extremely worried about you. They love you enough not to want to frighten you and for that you should be thankful and not feel they are being deceitful. Often people with bi-polar or schizophrenia will refuse to take their medications (may forget or become angry over the fact they are ill or even trick themselves into believing they aren't ill.) As advised by the above poster you should remain on this medication and also have a talk with your parents. Let them know you are aware of what you are taking and discuss it with them. Tell them that from now on you are mature enough to handle what is happening with you and you want to work with them on your illness and mean what you say. I would like you to know that thousands upon thousands of people suffer from all forms of depression so don't be embarrassed, angry or feel that you are going to end up in an institution and that you're crazy. If you take your medications you should be just fine. I'm in my last year of high school, and have been taking Seroquel for a year. I just stopped, and am desperately trying to recover the critical thinking skills I lost during having taken it in time for final exams. Seroquel may help with a lot of things, but it has the potential to SERIOUSLY make you dumber. It is impossible to think at the same level as you used to think, or at least it is for me. You might want to consider this, or share it with your parents. Seroquel is not only used as a anti psycotic. It is also used for people with sleep disorders and night terrors. It can be used in patients for instance with PTSD and insomnia.

Not a safe choice, as the klonopin will fire different chemicals in and out of your brain, while the seroquel will just knock you out. You will wake up confused and more or less with a hangover from your body recovering from what youv'e done.
