Reinforce constantly, but don't make it repetitive. Huskies get bored easily.

Research what an alpha dog is, make sure you understand the body language involved in the alpha/beta relationship.

Keep in mind that if you allow a behaviour once (like jumping on people as a puppy) it will always do it and it will be more difficult to make it stop.

Mix training with daily life events, like going through a door, handing them their food, walking on a leash, instead of making solid training sessions.

There are different types of Husky dogs. So it depends upon the breed of Husky dog. Some examples are:-a) A female Siberian Husky dog grows: 20 to 22 inches.b) The Labrador Husky is a fairly large dog which can weigh between 60-100 pounds and grow between 23 - 26 inches.

Ok, there are three types of husky that I'm familiar with. There is the Alaskan Husky, which is the smallest and lightest boned. There is the Siberian Husky, which is by breed standard, a medium sized dog. Then there is the Canadian Husky, which is very tall and much larger.

It's also important to note, that there is the Malamute, which many people mistake for a Husky on site. They look a lot like a Siberian Husky only they are much larger (90 -110 ibs. range fully grown), tend to have a more brown/white or brownish-grey/white coat and they NEVER have blue or bi-colored eyes. Their eyes are always a shade of brown.

Ok, back to the huskies... ;)

The Siberian Husky is the breed that has become what most people (including television and movies) think of when you think of what a husky is. As I mentioned above, the breed standard defines this as a medium sized dog. This is important because overbreeding has led to examples of this dog not only being sickly and thin but sometimes far too large.

A well bred Siberian, meeting breed standards, should be:

Females: 40 - 50 ibs. fully grown

Males: 50 - 60 ibs. fully grown

I don't have the height in inches memorized, but they should appear solid to slim, but height/weight proportionate. So if they look proportionate and meet the weight guidelines than they are probably just right.

This height and weight prerequisite is important because the Chukchi (sp?) people, from Siberia, needed them to pull sleds long distances and a dog that was too heavy couldn't run for a long time. Like wise, a dog too tall couldn't get the right leverage to pull as part of a team. I don't need to explain why an undersized dog wouldn't do.

Important tip: If your looking to get a Siberian Husky from a breeder, look for a sled dog ranch. Any dog coming from this environment will be from proven ancestry, with a lower chance of genetic/health defect.

Then again, your going to spend a much longer time looking and pay a lot more.

Otherwise adopt from a local husky rescue group. This is an incredibly noble thing to do and some of the most wonderful examples I've seen have come from a rescue. Most of the huskies you'll find with these groups are either pure Siberians Huskies, Husky mixes and sometimes you'll find a unique dog that is park husky and part something entirely else.

Oh yeah, buy a copy of "Huskies for Dummies". This isn't your average dog and requires a great deal of understanding.

Hope this helps and enjoy this special breed!
Huskies are a medium size canine. There fur is thick making them look like a larger type but such is not the case. They do, however, possess stronger hereditary DNA than most dogs, making them wider in girth (more muscular) and stronger skeletons (notice the bigger paws and overall features). This is due to the evolutionary history of the breed--duty animals in the artic. They have strong personalities to match their strong DNA.
males weigh about 46 to 50 pounds and females about 38 to 42 pounds
picture a table on its side....... that is how tall a husky dog grows to be.

Why do Siberian huskies have blue eyes?

Huskies often have different colored eyes, and this is called heterochromia. This condition is typically inherited. Huskies often have the complete type, meaning one iris is a complete different color than the other.

What is the physical appearance difference between a husky and a wolf?

Siberian Husky dogs are hardy canines, bred for the colder climes of our planet. They have a long thick double coat of any colour plus white, piebald is common. They may carry a blue eye gene and can have part or bi coloured eyes. Their ears are set high and are triangular and their noses are the same length as their head. They have upward curling tails, and their feet have long hair between the pads for grip on ice and for warmth. They are designed for a tight range of conditions, fit for their designed purpose, and look like the sled dog they are.

Can Siberian huskies have yellow eyes?

A Siberian husky's nose can be brown, black, pink or a mix of those colors.

How can you tell the sex of a Siberian husky?

You can get a clue from comparing your dog to other dogs and to pictures of other dogs. But unless you know its heritage there's no other way of knowing. Genetic analysis might be an option, but it'd cost a bundle and be utterly useless unless there's an approved database to compare it with, which isn't that likely.

Do sled dogs live in Antarctica?

No animal lives on Antarctica, on the continent -- as Antarctica is a polar desert, and no animals can survive there: it's too cold and there is no food chain. However, sea mammals and sea birds breed on Antarctica's beaches, because there are no land predators.

There are four species of penguins that breed on the continent's beaches: Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo and Emperor. These animals are sea birds and live at sea

Other birds which breed on the coastal fringes of the sub-Antarctic islands, visiting Antarctic waters, include various species of albatross, cormorant, fulmar, gull (kelp gull), petrel, sheathbill, skua, and the Arctic tern which migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic every year.

Seals which live in the Southern Ocean that surrounds the Antarctic continent include the Southern Elephant seal, Crabeater, Antarctic Fur, Leopard, Ross and Weddell seals.

Whales known to frequent Antarctic waters include the Blue whale, Fin, Humpback, Minke, Orca, Southern Right, Seiand Sperm whales.

Fish include the Antarctic cod, Patagonian toothfish and Icefish. Squid also live in the Antarctic waters.

Can you have a husky for a pet?

Huskies can be trained to be the tamest of dogs, when done properly and with enough time and effort.

Huskies (Siberian and Alaskan) were bred to run through the snowy north, as sled dogs. It is in their genetics to be responsive to human training, as well as a pecking order (alpha, beta, etc.)

Puppies ought to be left with their mothers for at least 12 weeks in order for them to learn proper behavioral lessons. This is the first step to ensuring a dog is tame; being with its mother teaches a puppy how to act appropriately and respect the pecking order. It also learns not to bite or be aggressive.

Socialization ought to take place following the first 10-12 weeks of a puppy's life. The more a dog is given the chance to interact with people, children, and other animals, the more comfortable it will become with similar situations. Situations involving aggressive dogs or young children that may harass the dog ought to be avoided.

However, most dogs can be trained to become tame, regardless of their history (such as shelter dogs). Huskies are responsive to kindness from their owners, and with proper training and rewarding, any dog can become tame. Dogs ought to be punished when they do something wrong, and rewarded when they act commendably.

Dogs are "man's best friend" for a reason, and huskies are no exception. If a husky is raised with love and care, it will return the favor tenfold.

How big are huskys?

The breed standard for Siberian Huskies says male dogs should stand 21-23½ inches, and females should be 20-22 inches in height. Males should weigh 45-60 pounds, and females weigh 35-50 pounds.

That said, there are plenty of "non-breed-standard" dogs out there who are either larger or smaller.

It depends, on if the mom and dad were big or small. It's not how the breed is, its how its genes are, that's like saying humans are normally 6 feet tall!
