Signs and Omens

From ancient symbols carved or painted in caves, through secret societies of past and present to naturally occurring phenomenon and gang tagging we will try to find meanings and interpretations for all.

Are ladybugs in your home a sign of good luck?

Not all naturally occurring phenomenon should be interpreted as an omen. As autumn progresses toward winter, nature's creatures look for warm, safe places to over-winter. Those of us who garden often bring out houseplants inside after a summer out of doors. These are more often than not the reason you fine ladybugs inside your home. However, if you are sure there is significance to the appearance of the pretty little bug, they are interpreted as: Money worries will pass, a windfall.

What is the purpose of taking a vow of celibacy?

In the Christian tradition there are several reasons. Jesus mentions those who give up marriage and family for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 19:12). Paul also makes mention of celibacy in 1 Corinthians 7:8, 32-35, 38. This is part of the reason for celibacy in the Christian tradition. Priests, religious, and laypersons that remain unmarried with no children are free to give their all to the service of God and their faith family. The idea of sacrifice is also closely connected to celibacy. If one studies the Scriptures, one will notice that only the very best is to be sacrificed or given to God. Since sexuality is a good thing, it makes it a fitting and worthy thing to sacrifice for God.

Why would a 5 pointed pentagram appear on your mirror?

I'm giving one answer... and it I am not claiming that it is a definitive answer.

I have encountered Pagans who believe that spirits often reside behind mirrors. I am racking my brain right now to think of what culture this stems from. The general theory is, that the spirits of the deceased can inhabit the space behind a mirror. Keeping a pentagram behind a mirror is a way to ward off evil spirits - or in some cases, spirits altogether.

Again, this may not be the most prevalent answer - or even the most relevant to your question. However, this is one reason, which I have encountered, as to why one might place a pentagram behind a mirror.

What is a pentacle?

The pentacle is and has been throughout Pagan history a symbol closely associated with Paganism and Witchcraft. In the past it was frequently made of a fragile or easily destroyed material so that it could not be used to incriminate the owner.

These days it is cast in more permanent materials and is found on Pagan Altars throughout the world. As Pagans have many and varied beliefs, I can only speak for what I know. Our group sees it as a representation of the five elements; Earth, Air, Fire, Water & Spirit. And it is used as a focus for blessings during Rites and Rituals.

What is considered lust?

The word lust is usually associated with sex. Biblically speaking, we are to refrain not only from adultery and fornication but even the very thought of them. Christ tells us that if we even entertain the thoughts in our minds that we are just as guilty. The bible stresses that the commandment about adultery is the only sin that we do with our physical bodies. We are defiling our body, mind and spirit by this sin.

What is the spiritual meaning of seeing a spider?

To see a spider in your dream indicates you are feeling like an outsider in some situation. Or perhaps you want to keep your distance and stay away from an alluring and tempting situation. The spider is also symbolic of feminine power or an overbearing mother figure in your life.

Alternatively, a spider refers to a powerful force protecting you against your self-destructive behavior. If you kill a spider in your dream, then it symbolizes misfortune and bad luck.

Dreams are a function of the subconscious.

Symbols have different meanings to different social groups. It therefore depends on the group to which you belong what those symbols mean.

For someone that has no knowledge of the group to which a person belongs and to claim to be able to interpret those symbols is nonsense.

Dreams mostly mean nothing and are a function of the subconscious mind. We know little of the conscious mind. Those people that claim to be able to interpret the subconscious are charlatans, playing upon the insecurities of people in need real support. Either for financial gain or kudos.

----

The last two sentences above tell the whole story.

How about this... Maybe when you dream of spiders it means ...(drum roll please)... you're dreaming of spiders! Hmmm...what a concept.
