385 Questions

Is smallpox curable or preventable and how is it?

Smallpox can be prevented in the vast majority of cases with a vaccine. Vaccination can be protective for up to several days after exposure to smallpox. Smallpox has been prevented through the effective Intensified Smallpox Eradication Programme, initiated by the World Health Organization.

On 26 July 1978, WHO announced the eradication of the smallpox strain Variola Minor. The more deadly strain, Variola Major, had been eradicated several years earlier, in 1975. While some other treatments available in the US today might treat smallpox infection, none have been fully (if at all) tested against smallpox.

In what year did the last known case of smallpox occur?

The last known natural case was in Somalia in 1977. Since then, the only known cases were caused by a laboratory accident in 1978 in Birmingham, England, which killed one person and caused a limited outbreak. Smallpox was officially declared eradicated in 1979.

It is known that if a person develops cow pox and recovers and then is exposed to smallpox and he or she is less likely to develop smallpox why?

This is because the two types of pox are related. Someone exposed to cowpox will develop antibodies to the cowpox. These antibodies will help fight against small pox. This phenomenon was observed by Edward Jenner, who used it to create a smallpox vaccine. (The word "vaccine" is related to the Latin word for "cow".)

What if you used cowpox to prevent the flu?

It wouldn't work. You must introduce the specific viruses that cause influenza to prevent the flu. Cowpox vaccines would be used for preventing cowpox (or some infections by closely related other poxviruses).

A similar virus to cowpox virus is Vaccinia virus which is the type of pox virus that was used to produce the vaccines originally developed and used to prevent smallpox. Smallpox is now eradicated from the wild thanks to worldwide use of smallpox vaccines made from Vaccinia.

Despite its name, cowpox virus does not infect cows, it infects mice, rats and other rodents.

How was smallpox cured during the civil war?

There was no cure for small pox, and there still isn't. If you got it, you either lived through it, after which you were immune to it, or you died.

What they could do was vaccinate, or inoculate people against the disease. The same principal was used as is used today when small children are given their vaccinations. You expose the person to a weak form of the disease, which allows the body to build an immunity against the disease, without having to endure the full course of the disease.

One way they did this was to take scabs off the sores of a person with small pox, slice them up into tiny bits, and make a little cut on the skin of the person to be vaccinated, and put one of the tiny bits of small pox scab in the cut. Like all vaccinations, there is a risk of acquiring a full-blown case of the disease, but if the vaccinated person was lucky he would just be achy and feverish for a few days, and afterward would be immune to small pox.

Who can Refuse medical treatment Can someone be forced into care against their will and then be bombarded with medical bills What are the conditions for refusal of treatment and what can someone do?

if you are in your right mind and can answer questions such as your name the date the president, then you can refuse treatment, they cannot take you against your will if you are in sound mind and can answer those questions it constitutes as assult and battery, you can sue on those grounds if you were in your right state of mind.

Anyone can refuse any treatment they do not wish to have done regardless. They can only perform a treatment with your full consent and if you have not consented then sue them for every penny they have got - get their licences revoked. I have refused treatment on numerous occassions and there is nothing they can do about it
