Can a collection agency freeze your bank account if you get Social Security checks in the state of Minnesota?

No one can seize a bank account without due process. SSD benefits by Federal Law are 100% exempt from creditor attachment. You must inform the court and provide evidence that the account has only SSD benefits and not other funds. Even so, all states have a set of exemptions that also includes a specified amount in a bank account that cannot be seized. It is sometimes called a "wild card." Without knowing your state of residency, I cannot be more specific, sorry.

How can Obama's social security number come from Connecticut when he's never lived there?

No, it is not. This is an internet myth, spread by people called the Birthers, who do not believe the president was born in the USA; they claim he has a fake social security number. (Some versions of this myth say the number is from Pennsylvania.) But the myth has been debunked numerous times by fact-checkers. There is no evidence Mr. Obama has a fake social security number, nor does he have one from Pennsylvania or Connecticut. His original card came from Hawaii, where he was born and where got his first job as a teenager. I enclose a link to one of the many sites that has refuted the "fake social security card" claim.

Can you receive unemployment benefits and Social Security at the same time in Rhode Island?

In MA I asked that same question. "Now that I'm getting disability, I guess I have to stop unemployment." Answer: "No, they are completely independent." So I collected in both. Of course, you will pay taxes on both, so put some aside.

It seems counter-intuitive, since disability means you can't work and in unemploment you state you can work.

I think the reasoning is: If you read your disability rules closely, they acknowledge the possibility that you find some work that you can do, and since that takes job-finding time you still qualify for unemployment.

How does social security act continue to affect the lives today?

. . . On the nature of the economic order, my assumption is that in this country we believe in a competitive economy with differential awards . . . Social security itself can, and in this country, does pay benefits in differing amounts to take account of differences in lost earnings. Yet at the same time it recognizes the actual or presumptive needs of beneficiaries. If we can agree on the kind of economic order we want, we still have the difficult job of reckoning with the forces on which its success depends . . . Thus we must consider the nation's productivity in deciding what social security benefits will be paid and under what conditions. Consider also, in a competitive society their effect on wage rates, on mobility of workers, on the business cycle and full employment. Mr. Altmeyer
