The main lake at Mount Gambier is called Blue Lake, rather than Lake Gambier. Situated within a volcanic crater, the lake is at its most brilliant blue in the early months of the year, during summer. The reasons for this colour change aren't fully known, but recent research has suggested it's due to an abundance of white calcite forming near the surface of the lake, making the water appear brighter blue. This formation of white calcite occurs because, in spring, a thin layer of warm water forms at the surface, which cuts off deep circulation in the lake. This means that the algae which is concentrated near the surface during winter does not mix as well, reducing the aqua appearance. The pH of the surface water is modified by the degassing of carbon dioxide, which in turn promotes the calcite. The production of the calcite removes the humic acids from the water column - these humic acids increase the absorbency of light in the blue end of the spectrum.

The main city shopping precinct, Rundle Mall, is in the next street. The River Torrens, Adelaide Festival Centre, and the Adelaide Zoo are a short walk away. The Adelaide Central Market near Victoria Square is also worth a visit, although it isn't open every day.
