Spark Plugs and Wires

Spark plugs and wires relay electricity from a source into the engine and its components. Spark plugs take in an electrical impulse from the wire coming from the distributor to give the spark in an internal combustion.

What is the mechanism behind starting a car?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you turn the key of your car,a signal is sent to the starter solenoid via cable. Now the starter solenoid draws power from battery and gives it to the starter motor which has a retractable gear attached to it.

The motor starts and the gear messes with the flywheel to turn the crankshaft. The pistons attached to the crankshaft now draws air-fuel mixture (in case of petrol engine) and as soon as enough mixture is sucked, the battery operated spark-plug makes a spark and combustion starts. During the process the flywheel gets enough momentum to continue on its own, the gear retracts and the cycle goes on...

This is the answer true to my best knowledge, hope it satisfies you.

How do you change the spark plugs on a 2.5L 4-cylinder 2001 outback?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

get under the car and do it from there. you will have to put socket in first then the extension, then the rachet. that is the only way i did it. I just got done. On the left side (standing at the front facing the back) remove all of the air intake stuff, 4 bolts. On the right side, remove the washer fluid tank, 2 bolts and 2 connectors. Took me about 25 minutes including new plug wires.

Can you change a dryer plug to fit a regular wall plug?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Different plugs are designed so that you can't plug an appliance into the wrong voltage. A dryer is usually 220-240 Volts and your standard outlet is 110-120 Volts. You can't do what you suggest.

The intake manifold has to be taken off and the gaskets replaced due to the spark plugs being under the manifold.

It would be best to take it to your dealer.

If you plug a 120 appliance into a 220 plug what will happen?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You could be in for a "shocking" experience. The 110v device could blow up, catch on fire, short out and injure (possibly fataly) anyone near the device.

Just don't do it. Use some common sense around electricity ... it really hurts when it bites.

What does a multiplexer look like?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Physically a multiplexer usually looks like a box of some sort. More important is what is inside. The inside of a multiplexer contains a switch or switches, a power supply, and the electronic circuits to manage the system.

One link is to informative datasheets for a couple of multiplexer Integrated Circuits from which much can be learned about multiplexer characteristics. There are many, many more kinds of multiplexer ICs.

How do you change the spark plugs on a 1998 350 clubwagon V10?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

theres a cover hiding everythign that needs to be pulled off first. the fuel injectors might need to be turn a tad to work in there. each individual plug has a coil on top of it. you have to unblolt them and pull it out. it will have a rubber boot and a spring inside that might break off, but pull it all off. then unscrew the plug and repeat the process.

word to the wise : a mechanic told me if you disturb the coils they will cause the engine to miss fire so your better off waiting to change the plugs until the cylinder misfires, but all that need to be changed is the rubber boots and springs if it does miss

How do you change the spark plugs in a 2001 Tahoe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

you will see 4 black square modules on each valve cover with wires going to them along with a plug. undo the plug, and you will need a small nut driver to undo the one screw that holds it in place. Then you will be able to pull straight up, (it may take a little tug) on the module and it will all pull out. down at the bottom you will find your plug.

Can you plug a 220V lamp into a 110V outlet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A higher voltage incandescent (not transformer powered) lamp will work on a lower voltage system but, as has been mentioned in the answer below, it won't be as bright.

Often 130 Volt lamps are used on a 120 Volt system to make a so called "long life bulb".

A 240 Volt lamp would barely glow on a 120 Volt supply and it would use only a quarter of the energy (Watts) that it would normally use at 240 Volts (because of the way voltage and current are related to energy) but it could still be used as a heat source in a small enclosure without having the brightness of a normally-used lamp.

<><><>

There is some very "muddled thinking" going on in the suggested answers below this one...

So let's get some things clear in our minds...

1. Light bulbs have "bases" on them, not "plugs".

2. You never "plug" a bulb into an "outlet", you "screw" it into a "lamp holder".

3. The idea of running a 220-240 Volt bulb from a 110-120 Volt circuit is about as sensible as asking if you can drive a car around all day in first gear... Sure you can do it, but it just doesn't make sense! The lamp will glow so weakly as to be useless as a practical source of light so it would be a waste of a perfectly good bulb!

4. If you want to have a low light output, all you need to do is to use a low wattage 110-120 Volt bulb!

<><><>

Probably not. The plugs should be different and not compatible with the socket.

<><><>

Correction: Yes, you can if you just rewire with a standard UL approved plug which you can get at your local hardware store. The lights will be very dim, but will last a long time. Most regular 220v bulbs have Edison bases and you can simply change them out with 120v bulbs and you're good to go.

What causes corrosion?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Basically, corrosion is a disintegration of a material. Corrosion is typically associated with rusting, but that is only one type of corrosion. Other types of corrosion include, erosion, cavitation, fretting, galvanic, thermo-galvanic, intergranular, pitting, and more. The main causes boil down to a few root causes, chemical reactions, friction and a lack of durability.

Rust is a chemical reaction, there are more types of reactions than from water and air. Reactions from other metals, acids, etc. cause corrosion as well. Friction can cause stress cracking, fretting, and intergranular corrosion and erosion. Two pieces of metal that rub on each other can cause fretting and lead to corrosion. Or water running over a rock for a few hundred years can turn it into a smooth pebble. Durability is key. Some substances are harder than others, and thus harder to disintegrate.

Automotive Solutions:

powder coating and plating are common methods to prevent corrosion. Electroless nickel plating is common within parts like ABS sensor rings and gears. powder coating is used on pumps and tanks. zinc plating is often used on bolts and braces.

Below is a link to a study on corrosion, its costs, causes and how to prevent it.

Can you run a 110V plug off a 220V plug?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

yes, you would have to replace the single poll breaker with a 2 poll of the same trip rating. I use the word carefully often as a reminder, the circuit breaker panel is hot. If you have the luxury of turning off the main breaker, do so. It also assumed you have room for a 2 pole breaker.

Tools you will need; Flat head and/or Philips screwdriver, test light or meter, red electrical tape and wire cutters/strippers.

# With the cover carefully removed, locate the existing single poll circuit in your panel. # shut breaker off, verify with test light or meter. # Remove black wire from breaker and carefully trace back to where the wire comes into the panel. This will help you locate the paired white wire .

# Carefully remove the white wire from the neutral buss. Note: Leave the green ground wire where it is. All circuits must be grounded regardless of voltage!

# Using the red electrical (trace) tape, run a few turns of tape over the white insulation jacket to signify line 2 or another hot wire. White always represent neutral, red represents hot as does black. Note: You should repeat the trace tape step at the other end of this wire for safety.

# Neatly and carefully move new red trace wire to breaker location and pair with black. # Carefully remove existing breaker by prying the breaker up from opposite side of the screws, towards the direction of the screws.

# Carefully stab down new 2 pole breaker by first installing the foot (below the screws) of the breaker in the shoe or tab. Then carefully push the other end down over the buss bars. Note: the breaker must be in the off position. you'll get zapped other wise.

# install black wire in top screw and red trace wire in bottom screw, or match any existing 2 pole breakers in your panel. Tighten, but do not over tighten screws.

# Close up the panel flip the breaker as long as the other side is buttoned up and good luck.

yes it does use energy. My straightener uses energy when it is plugged in, but not on. What i have learned to do is unplug all the things that don't need to be plugged in. If u think that something needs to stay plugged in then leave it in but if it doesn't my best advise is to unplug it!

How do i change spark plugs in 2002 Hyundai Elantra?

User Avatar

basically, if you lift the hood and look directly at the engine (the big silver thing), on the top left side of it as you are looking at it from the front is where you place the oil in (oil cap). Just above that are the four spark plugs. They are underneath the plug and coils. you would have to unscrew the two bolts holding the coils down to get to two of the spark plugs, and the other two spark plugs, you just pull the wires off. (Just pull)
