Back in the 1800's they were not respected as much. It was ok for their husbands to beat them, they could not vote, they did not get jobs because no one would hire them. But during World War 1 they actually worked in the factories to make up for the loss of workers, because most of the men went to fight in the war.

Spartans were not supposed to have money as Lycurgus (an ancient spartan who basically made all their rules) forebade it as money was the root of all EVIL... 0_0 ...according to him at least. :-P

But the slaves(each male Spartan had two personal + number of them at home) were allowed to have money,and did all the buying for Spartans themselves.Also Periokoi were allowed to have money,so money did exist and was in use in Sparta.Only citizens-soldiers were not allowed to have or use any.

Sparta beat Athens with the help of the Persians. The Spartans sold land in Asia Minor so that they could build a navy with that navy they crushed Athens' navy and Athens surrendered.

When the Greek cities of Asia Minor revolted against Persian rule in 499 BCE, Eretria and Athens sent contingents to join them and Athens led an expedition in 498 BCE which captured and burnt down the Persian provincial capital of Sardis. This caused the Persian king Darius to send a punitive expedition to establish Persian-appointed tyrants to keep the two cities under control. The Persian force captured Eretria, but was defeated by Athens at Marathon.

Athenians were committed to earning their living, with military service part time, for training and being called out when necessary.

The Athenian youth learnt to work on the farm, fishing boat or trade, taught by and with his male relatives. The Spartan youth a taught physical fitness and warfighting by male instructors.

It all starts at birth, if the baby (you) seemed too small and weak you would be left to die (I heard they threw the kid off a cliff though).

At a very young age, around five or six, the government would take you away from your family to train to be a soldier. ("There is no greater pride than serving in the military")

While you and the other boys were in what we would call a modern day boot camp, (except there was a greater risk you would die) you would be put in fights to the death with your friends, you would be shown NO mercy by the experienced soldiers, you would be encouraged to steal (but of course if you got caught you either get a limb chopped off or be put to death). But the final test of becoming a man would be to kill a slave and not get caught.

When you're finally allowed into the army. Their motto was "come back with your shield or on it" Interpret it how you choose. You would fight for their ENTIRE life climbing up military ranks until, of course, you are too old to fight.

The next stage of life is when you're old. You can help control the government along side your fellow elders (It has some special name, I just can remember it xP). ONLY the elders could run this show. The young one do not have enough life experience.

When a child is born, Spartans check if it is a healthy baby. If it is not, the baby gets thrown off a cliff or put somewhere so it can die. Spartans wanted only the strongest and healthiest people to represent them. Later, a boy at age seven is sent to military school, to train. Boys battle against boys to see who can become a warrior. When a Warrior turns 20, they can officially start their military career.

It was not bad, but most people wanted to be warriors. Every day in Sparta people had to be brave. I believe they had the inspiration from Ares god of war.
