Why does your violin strings squeak on the E string?

It's because the E string lies low at the very the right side of the bridge, so it has more tendency to hit the fingerboard when you strike it with your bow, especially if you have your violin tuned to a lower pitch. Another reason is that you might not be pressing the string hard enough onto the fingerboard with your fingertips.

It was created about 1917, often credited to Alvin Keech. It was very popular in the 20's and 30's during the vaudeville days, as it had better projection and sound than the ukulele. A 'standard' String Quartets will have 2 violins, a viola and a 'cello. However, there are some quartets (usually for early beginners in primary school) written for 3 violins & 'cello due to the relative rarity of violas at a young age.

ML: The director chose me. I met him three times to speak about the script. He chose someone else who could not play the violin. The role was a big challenge involving much training. She dropped out. What violins are made in Europe?

I cannot give you a list of specific makes, but one of mine (the one I use the most) is made in Germany by a company called Heinrich Gill. It is an excellent violin and it is very rich on the lower strings, and generally rich throughout. I believe (I don't have it with me currently to verify) that it is a no. 66. All of their violins are made from aged wood by hand.

How much is too much for a violin?

It depends on what you want to do with it. Are you a student, a reasonably good amateur, or a professional? If you are a student, you can probably expect to pay around $250-$500 for a starter kit, which includes the violin, bow, and case. A good manufacturer to look for is Glaesel. They produce sturdy instruments of reasonable quality for a beginner. Of course, if the student is young, you may want to rent instead of buy, because they will change violin sizes as they grow.

In terms of a good amateur violin, you will pay around $2000-$4000. This does not include the bow or case. And if you are a professional, the sky is the limit! Stradavariuses can go for millions.
