Can an eight string mandolin be strung to the same strings as a tenor ukulele GCEA - thanks?

You could certainly tune the Mandolin like that. It just requires the right size strings to be used. You could then use ukulele tabs to play songs, but the sound would be different.

Has a double bass use bass or treble or other?

I believe you mean to say "Does a double bass read from bass or treble clef?" The answer to that is bassists almost always read bass clef. But very good bassists that play very high read treble clef often and sometimes tenor clef.

How do you know how much to tighten a violin bow?

You need it to be firm, but not so taut that you can see the hairs being stretched too much. There should be a bit of "give". When you draw it across the strings, it should not be so flexible that any of the hairs touch the wood of the bow. Your smallest finger should be able to fit through the gap between the wood and the hair, just touching both of them.

What musical instrument is called a tubular?

The only instrument I can think of with "tubular" as part of its name (rather than a description) is the "Tubular Bells", also called Orchestral Chimes. This instrument has a frame with the chimes suspended from gut strings and arranged so that their upper ends look a bit like a piano keyboard: natural notes along the bottom and sharps/flats arranged in 3's and 2's above. There is usually a pedal which moves a mute to the side. The mute silences the entire set of chimes at once by pressing felt or leather against the mid-point of the chime.

The chimes are usually gold color metal (often plated) and the top edge is rolled or capped to form a striking edge. The instrument is played by pressing the mute pedal to unmute all the chimes at once, and striking the top of each chime that is to produce a note with a rolled-leather-headed hammer. Only the leather hammer should be used, and the chimes should never be struck anywhere but at the top!

The sound is much like church bells, with the klang (stacked fourths) being characteristic in its partial makeup.

Why is it bad to touch the horsehair on a bow?

It is bad to touch the horsehair on the bow because on your hand and fingers there is an oil and dirt and when that comes in contact with the horsehairs, it gets on it and then oil could change the hair and make it dirty which is not good. It also will make the horsehair not playable after time as well.

Do budget violins play?

Can you rephrase the question please? Do you mean: Do cheap violins sound good? If that is what you mean, I can answer that. I have just passed my grade 4 with merit, so I know quite a bit about violins. It really depends on the player, you see. But the older the violin is the better it sounds. I am just about to by a good, old one. the price range for older ones, are probably minimum of £650-£700, minimum. The older it is, the better the wood is. The most bottom range that you can get of violins is an Antoni. Starter violins. I recommend you start on an Antoni, as they are very cheap, so if you decide that you don't want to play anymore, then you havn't lost lots of money. If you definitely are going to play, then try a Stentor violin. That is better, and it costs about £80-£150.

I hope you found this helpful.
