How did life in Sumer differ from life in a small farming community of the region?

Sumerian life was different from life in a small farming community because Sumer was a civilization. The five different traits that define a civilization were all present in Sumer that couldn't possibly exist in a diminutive farming community. Sumer would be closer to the lifestyle today than a small farming community would be. Sumer grew from advanced cities, had complex institutions, developed record-keeping, and applied advanced technology to everyday endeavors, unlike the characteristic traits of a farming community, which would be a band of people living together, with primitive technology and no governing or record keeping, and probably on its way to being a city. A person living in Sumer would probably have a specialized job which he would be an expert in; belong to a social class, and trade to acquire the resources he needs. A person living in a farming community would depend on his own crops and animals for resources, have no defined social class, and would have a job, which would most likely be farming.

How was sumer discovered?

In 1869, Jules Oppert suggested to the French society of Numismatics & Archeology that recognition be given to the existence of Pre-Akkadian language & people. Pointing out that early rulers of Mesopotamia proclaimed their legitimacy by taking the title "King of Sumer & Akkad," he suggested the people be called "Sumerians," and their land, "Sumer.

Except for mispronouncing the name - it should have been Shumer, not Sumer - Oppert was right.

Book of Genesis had clearly stated: The royal cities of Babylon & Akkad & Erech were in "the Land of Shin'ar. Shin'ar was the biblical name for Shumer.

Once the scholars had accepted these conclusions, the flood gates were opened. The first significant excavation of a Sumerian site was begun in 1877 by French archaeologists. Finds were so extensive that others continued to dig until 1933 without completing the job.
