Sunrise and Sunset Times

On the winter solstice at a latitude of 57 degrees north, the sun will be about 33 degrees below the horizon at night. This is because the tilt of the Earth causes the sun to not rise above a certain angle during the winter months at this latitude.

Knowing the times of sunrise and sunset can help us plan our day efficiently, whether it's for outdoor activities, photography, or simply to keep track of time. I would explain to kids that a sunset happens when the sun goes down below the horizon in the evening, creating beautiful colors in the sky like pinks, oranges, and purples. This happens because of the way the Earth rotates and the sunlight interacts with the atmosphere. It's a magical time of day when we can watch the sky change colors and say goodbye to the sun until it rises again in the morning.

Here's the formula: From sunset until the Sun is six degrees below the horizon is civil twillight. It's still light enough to read. When the Sun is six to twelve degrees below the horizon is nautical twilight. One can still see the horizon at sea; that is, tell when the sea stops and the sky starts. From twelve to eighteen degrees is astronomical twilight, which is when the stars start to come out. After the Sun is more than eighteen degrees below the horizon, it's officially Night.

There are only a few days per year on which you can see the sun from the north pole and the south pole at the same time (due to the atmosphere bending the light like a lens).

All along any line of longitude (the lines that go from pole to pole), local mean time is the same.

At far northern (and far southern) latitudes during the summer, the sky remains light much or all of the "night". In northern Russia, these times are sometimes called "white nights", because the sky never really gets dark. The Sun sets, if it does, far north of west, and doesn't go much below the horizon, and after an hour or two, it rises again far to the north of east.

A personal tale; I was in the US Navy, and our squadron was deployed to Keflavik, Iceland, only a couple of degrees of latitude south of the Arctic Circle. It was late in the day, so we went to the officer's club and had dinner. Then a few drinks, then watched a band play for an hour or three, and a few more drinks..... We left the club at 2AM.

No, it does not get completely dark near the summer solstice in central Scotland. During this time of the year, there is a phenomenon called "white nights" where the sky remains relatively light throughout the night, but it doesn't get completely pitch black.

Many people comment that it looks very much like twilight, in that it gets slowly darker - even though the sun is still high in the sky!

Light rays from the sun are going over the earth hitting something as the atmosphere or changing mediums and it's than scattered the sky is blue because about 70 percent of the scattered light is blue and that's what you see when the sun sets the percentage changes than red yellow and orange colors take over the majority and so you see those scattered light rays than that's why you see ryo sunsets etc...

The sun being nine degrees below the horizon indicates that it is in the civil twilight phase. At this point, there is still enough light for most outdoor activities without the need for artificial lighting.
