If you're just swimming for fun or trying to see who can hold your breath the longest with your friends, breathe in as much air as you can and then slowly let it out as you go. If you swim competitively, it really depends. I've found when I sprint in freestyle I can do a 25 without breathing if I tildmy head all the way down, cup my hands, and charge forward as fast as I can, although I don't think you're supposed to have your head that low... competition and practice caps will keep about 90% of hair dry. my thought is this: if it is an attempt to keep chlorine out of your hair, it is best to wet your hair with tap or bottled water first. hair soaks up water like a sponge, so if your sponge (hair) is saturated with low chlorine water, then not much else can get in to do damage. aloha

I'm not quite sure of the exact scientific method, but if the pool is to shallow than it would be a problem, because you could kick the bottom of the pool. I always find it easier to swim in water around 1.5m deep, because if its too deep it makes me work harder, because i want to stay afloat.
