How is tap dancing a sport?

I know there is controversy about whether dance is a sport at all. But there are some arguments that can be made to say that tap dancing can most definitely be considered a sport. It's athletic. If you pick your feet up and use your whole body you should be breathing fairly hard by the end of the routine. More athletic than GOLF which is considered a sport. This alone doesn't make it a sport for most people. All sports are competing against another person or group. Ever go to a dance competition? It's highly competitive. There's music... so what? Gymnasts have music in their meets for floor work and beam and gymnastics is a sport. Also the mental capacity needed for a tap dancer is quite extreme to learn all of those rhythms and the order of all the steps. Tap dancing is a sport:

1. Athletic

2. Dance Competitions

3. Music is okay to use in a sport

4. Mental sport as well, common sense.

Is tap dancing easy?

  • i would say no, i think it is hard. I love tap and i would say its my most successful area of dance. Its my talent. I think its hard because you have to do a lot of things at once. Tap shoes are like a musical instrument, you have to understand rhythm and beats well in order to tap dance. Every beat is like a note. You also have to present your self, dance neatly and listen to the music. You have to have quite loose ankles. Things like wings and pickups are the hardest for those with stiff ankles.

Although... I would say definitely give tap a go! Its so fun! And you learn lots of skills! Give it a go... you never know you might be good at it.

  • Anybody can tap dance as long as you are going to try hard and learn the new things. If you start when you are little it makes it easier. This is what I did and I am now one class ahead of where I should be. Some people may think it is hard but only if they are not good at it. You have to stay at it and practice just like anything you do.

Why was tap dancing invented?
