Pamela Courson, Jim's girlfriend/common law wife, was named in his will as the heir to his entire estate. In the event that Pamela died within a few months of his death, the estate was to be divided between Jim's brother, Andrew, and sister, Anne.
After Jim's death, the remaining members of The Doors filed a lawsuit against his estate, claiming he owed the band money for advances extended to him. It was also necessary for Courson to prove a common law marriage to counter claims to the estate by Morrison's family.
This froze the estate's assets, and for most of the remaining 3 years of Pam's life, she struggled financially. She did receive one payout and bought herself a fur coat and a new volkswagen bug. She died of a heroin overdose in April of 1974, mere days prior to the court ruling she was legally married to Jim and the rightful heir to his estate.
At that point, the Morrison family lodged a lawsuit against the Coursons, who were the legal heirs to their daughter's estate, which included her inheritance from Jim. The Morrisons and the Coursons eventually settled, with one half of Jim's estate going to each family.
