I would venture to say that preconceived ideas about World War III would be a global nuclear devastation. That being said, a world war would include a type of war that all, most or many countries were fighting at the same time.
I believe we are currently in a World War and thus being number three. War has been declared by Islam against the rest of the world and we see many Islamic terrorist attacks throughout the world. It's a guerrilla World War III and something I don't think the world has expected. Furthermore, I don't think anyone can contest that the world is not at war with terrorism and especially the brand displayed from Islam.

Answer:The world has been predicted to end on numerous occasions ever since Mark's Gospel had Jesus say that this apocalyptic event would occur within the lifetimes of some people then living. We managed to get through 21 December 2012, when once again it was going to end, so why not make 2015 the next year for the apocalypse?Why the worl is going to end in 2012?

*World War III (although it is unlikely that that would exterminate whole of humanity)
*Meteor hit (would kill millions on impact and billions in the years after, dust in the atmosphere from the hit would block sunlight, so everything would die) lucky that we got fossil fuels :) cause no more wind or sun.
*Epidemic of some kind of very aggressive virus
*Gamma flash (flash emitted from a black hole, can exterminate whole star systems at once). would blow away our atmosphere.
*Alien invasion if they don't come in peace and are a lot more advanced then us.

I think that the cause of WWIII will be overpopulation, water shortage and starvation. We are seeing the population explode from zero to under 500 million in 40,000 years to nearly 7 billion in the last 300 years and it will increase to probably 10 billion in the next 40 years. The earth and it's resources cannot sustain that growth, and humans are too greedy and selfish to do anything about it. Steven Hocking was right, the only chance humanity has of surviving earth is to find a way off it.

The ancient Greeks knew that the world was not flat, they didn't all believe it was round, some thought it a kind of circular spiral, but that knowledge was lost during the Dark Ages. By 1500, many educated people believed that the world was round, but it was not until the 1800's that that knowledge became widespread. this is mainly due to people who went against the beliefs of the time, generally got themselves killed. The message that would be preached is that God's Kingdom in the hands of Jesus Christ has begun to rule in the heavens, that soon it will put an end to the entire wicked system of things, that under its rule mankind will be brought to perfection and earth will become a paradise. If you want exact quotes on the end time, read parts of Matthew and Revelation. The Bible speaks of the coming of the Antichrist. He will unite the world and he will rule. There are many prophecies about the Antichrist. Before his rule Jesus' followers will be taken. There will be seven years before Jesus comes again. Half way through, the Devil inhabits the Antichrist. Then Jesus will come again after seven years and the Gentiles will be cast into the Lake of Fire to their eternal doom and his followers will be rejoicing in heaven after the great war that we will win. I think the real issue is understanding via 2nd Peter 3, and Ecclesiastes 12:7 to obtain the real picture that each Soul existed in the 1st earth iteration which failed due to the actions of Satan (Revelation 12), Now all Souls have a second chance in this 2nd iteration to do those good works which allow them to pass judgement and get to the 3rd iteration (Revelation 20 & 21).
The failure of many people is assuming that there will be a great Rapture before the appearance of Satan as Anti-Christ who then is evil to the remaining left behind. However its clear via biblical texts such as Daniel 11 that Satan comes in in peacefully, Revelation 13 identifies Satan as appearing like the lamb (looks like Christ), and he has super powers which allow him to cause lighting to appear right in front of people, which deceives them.
Why is the world supposed to end?
Depends on who you ask. The Relativist will say that it will end in 125 billion years or so, when no particle will have any other particle in its future (including light). The Solar scientist will say that all life will end on Earth in about 5 billion years, when the Sun becomes a red giant. A Christian will say various things, but some of them will say when the Earth drops into a sea of fire. Estimations of "when" vary too. Personally, I figure it will end when we pass a tax law just a few more pages thick. But then it is not waiting for some end, but experiencing the now that is most important. We won't get out of this "sky dive" alive anyway... but we can always do more than Nature seems to allow. Maybe our progeny will get the chances we can't.
There are currently 9 failed predictions of the Rapture. 2 predictions say that the world will end October 21,2011 and another prediction is in 2060. The reason they predict the Rapture due to complicated calculations. It's rather hard to explain. Harold camping predicted the world ending in 1994, which led to the Great Disappointment. He's also the one who predicted it would end may 21. He's 89 years old ... so that may explain a lot lol.
