If your unit is however on a gabled end of house under eave then probably not a problem. #2,,, The access panels for service entry are often located on the back side of these outside units and therefore, ready and safe access is a good idea and in general will improve your chances of getting a speedier and more quality repair should it be in need of servicing. Therefore it stands to reason that a few inches of clearance for a service man to do his thing isn't going to help improve his/her/your chore at hand when repairing and servicing. #3,,, There are some side discharge type units with front access panels that can be used in these situations ( but! ) there are fewer of them available on the market now days and the most typical of designs is the fan on top blowing upwards. #4,,, I have seen some cases where people have actually built little leanto roofs and such over the units to help alleviate any problems that have been caused by this close quarters installment. But!!!! lol,,, there is that proverbial But !!!! again,,,,,, This is not recommended by mfg.s of these units for the simple reason it can disrupt the smooth airflow of the design and cause efficiency problems and worst case scenero ( overheat problems ) Overall summary: Not generally a good idea.
