All the cats in CATS are having a giant dance but they have to wait for their leader, Deuteronomy, to come before they can begin. As they wait, several of the cats are introduced through songs (The Gumbie Cat, Mungojerrie & Rumpleteaseer, The Rum Tum Tugger, etc.). Eventually, Deuteronomy arrives but is later captured by the bad guy Macavity, but is once again returned to the clan after the magician cat (The Magical Mister Mistofellees) . Deuteronomy's biggest job is to pick the cat that will be reincarnated into another cat every year. There are two candidates that are presented this year: Gus the Theater Cat and Grizabella the Glamour Cat. All of the cats in the clan shun Grizabella because she left the clan to go find fame and fortune but now she is old and unwanted; she sings "Memory". Deuteronomy chooses her and she is sent to the "Heavyside Layer" which is basically the cats' version of heaven.

When was the first musical theatre produced?
Musical theatre started out in the early 1900s with shows called Broadway Reviews, aka vaudeville shows. The music was all that was important and the plot was almost nonexistent. There were a few shows that stood out and are still performed today (Showboat, Anything Goes). The music in these shows were not character driven or gender based. Anyone could sing them and they were often used in multiple shows. This was also the popular music of that era. Then in 1943, Oklahoma! opened on Broadway and changed the way musical theatre worked. Now the plot was just as important as the music if not more, and the songs were character driven and related to the plot. Thus begins the Golden Age of musicals. This era lasted until the mid to late 1960s when rock music started to affect the stage. This started the Contemporary age, when musicals started to become more abstract and people started trying new ways to look at theatre. . Newer and stranger plots came into play and the music began to change. This is the era we are now in.

Does Prudy pingleton have a large part in the musical hairspray?
Sorry, no, Prudy Pingleton is not a large part in Hairspray. Prudy is characterized as a non-singing role, though she does has very small singing parts in "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" and "You Can't Stop the Beat." Oftentimes, one actress will play the roles of Prudy, the Gym Teacher, and the Matron.
On the positive side, there is room for improvisation, particularly at the end of the musical, when she comes to the Corny Collins Show in search of Penny.
Prudy may not be a large part, but the role requires a skilled actress in order to create a Prudy who is more than a one-dimensional villain.
