Alvaro was a famous jockey who was born in Mexico on a dirt floor. He came to California at about the age of 15 to race horses. This may not be in the fact book but his favorite race track was Santa Anita which was also the race track where he met his wife Donna. Unfortunately it is also where he died in the gates when his horse, Austin Mittler, reared up unexpectedly on January 18th 1975. He was well respected by other jockeys and was known for never swearing no matter how angry. His younger brother Roberto died two years later in a similar accident at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore Maryland. He is survived by his wife Donna, Son Matthew (President of Castle and Cooke), and daughter Charlene (Successful actress and producer).

Some horses have nose bleeds when given strenous excercise, so they ar given lasix to lower their blood pressure reducing the possiblity of the nose bleeds. It is done to improve the publics view of horse racing, not because the horse is in any real danger from the nose bleeds. I just doesn't do the racing industry any good to see a horse in the winner circle with blood dripping from a nose bleed or bloody frothy foam around the mouth and nostrils.
