How many dust mites live in typical bed?

Tens of thousands probably, sometime more, sometimes less. Control methods include vacuuming and reducing the humidity in your home. However, you can cover beds in mite proof materials, preferably without any chemicals (as these can be just as harmful). Unfortunately just reducing the humidity won't necessarily reduce the mite population in a bed. They (especially the males) huddle together to conserve moisture, hence ensure you air the bed well and take the opportunity on hot sunny days to get your pillows and duvets outside. Washing at 60°C (and it must reach these temperatures for 20 mins) can also significantly reduce both the allergen and dust mites numbers. Dyson did a test to prove this with their contrarotator washing machine, which was the first to pass the British Allergen Foundation approval for a wash cycle. I know as I developed the test with them whilst working at Dyson.

Do some homework before answering these questions a typical bed can house up to 10 million dust mites.

How do you get rid of spider mites for ever?

They are tough. I am assuming that you are reffering to a greenhouse situation. Because in nature, these little pests are controlled by mite predators, which are mites themselves. Indoors, it's a little more difficult and sometimes if it's really bad, you have to dump everything and sanitize and just start over.

First off, sanitation is paramount. Don't let anybody bring something over as a gift. Don't bring in anything in from a discount store unless you know it is bug free. If possible, grow everything from seed or at least bug-free cuttings.

If it's too late for that, then try soap solution sprays. Fog a solution of say 10% Dawn onto the plants and make sure to get 100% coverage. Repeat every two to three days because new eggs will be hatching out and the spray doesn't affect the eggs. Rinse and repeat. It may take two months or more.

If you try to use insecticides, you will kill any mite predators and the red mites will develope a resistance to the pesticide and you can't win that one.

If it's really bad, just start over. It will save you time.

Are ticks and lice common?

I believe so. I have never been bitten in all my 40 years. I am always outdoors in Wyoming and I find ticks crawling on me all the time, but I have never had one in me. Just the other day I spent the night out in our deserts and a couple of days walking around the sagebrush hills. When I woke up the next morning and was changing my clothes, I found 6 ticks on me that I had slept with all night. I found one on the screen of my tent trying to get in. But not one tick on me. My father has never had a tick in him before either, and he is 64 years old. My 18 year old son has never had a tick in him. But all 3 of my daughters and my wife have all had multiple ticks.

Do bunnies attract ticks?

yes

Any creature that has blood can be the dinner plate of a tick. They are in the grass and weeds and are alerted by the vibration of something passing. They reach out and cling to whatever passes by that they can reach. They then attach their lovely little faces to you and dig in until you become their own personal walking dinner. When they are full they usually drop off. "Thanks for the ride and the free meal, be you deer, rabbit, groundhog, dog, cat, human whatever."

How do you treat mites in a bunny?

The way to get rid of mites on your rabbit is by bringing her to a vet with experience and knowledge in rabbit care (not all vets do, but because some cat/dog treatments are not as effective on rabbits, and sometimes toxic for them, it's important to find one who knows what he's doing).

According to the link below, the best drug for getting rid of mites on rabbits is selamectin (brand names Revolution and Stronghold). This is not something you can do at home: bring the rabbit to the vet for help.

One person writes: When my rabbit had mites we took her to the vet and the vet told us to put a little bit of cat mite protection on her neck and it worked. The best thing you should do is take it to the vet, I'm sure you don't want your rabbit getting sick!

What do blue tick jack Russell mixes look like?

Does it hurt when a tick bites you?

They hurt a LOT! I just pulled a tick out of my leg this morning. I discovered it because it hurt. It has hurt the entire day. I don't even have to touch it for it to hurt. It hurts without touching it. Touching it does not make it hurt more or less. It is red, no bullseye. My husband and daughter say the tick too big to be a deer tick, so my tick is probably a dog tick.

The bite is on the back of my upper hamstring. It hurts kind of like a bee sting does after the initial sting (not as bad as the sting) without the throbbing. I tried Neosporin with pain reliever, but it didn't work. I'm going to try Acetaminophen next.

Update: I just found my tick on the web. It is a female deer tick :(

Where do dust mites live?

House Dust Mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinusand D. farinae are the most common species of house dust mites in North Carolina . These tiny mites are most abundant in warm, humid areas. Contrary to popular belief, house dust mites do not bite or sting. They feed on shed human skin scales that collect in the dust on furniture, particularly mattresses, and on carpeting below beds. House dust mites are important medically because they produce allergens in their secretions and excrement. Inhaling airborne house dust containing mite feces and cast skins is a common cause of asthma in young children. Products containing benzoyl benzoate and other ingredients are often used for severe infestations of house dust mites. However, the long-term solution to reducing a house dust mite problem is sanitation and environmental modifications: * Vacuum (possibly with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner) frequently and thoroughly to remove mites and the organic debris on which they feed. Target critical areas, such as: * ** mattresses and bed frames ** rugs and carpets (especially under beds) ** overstuffed furniture (and the area underneath) * Change air conditioner filters frequently and maintain low (less than 50%) humidity indoors to reduce conditions favorable to dust mites. * Encase mattresses and pillows in plastic covers and change bed linen frequently to help prevent mite populations from building up

What is the tick like black bug that bites?

I don't think this person is describing an assassin bug, which is not black, and does not bite like a tick but "stings" with a huge, needle-like proboscis that unfolds and hurts like a red-hot needle going in! An assassin bug looks more like a large stink-bug from an alien planet, with a distinctive spiny ridge on its back that looks like half a rusty, cogged wheel is emerging from it. I don't think anybody who has ever seen a tick would ever call an assassin bug "tick-like"!

I've been bitten twice this year by a "black, tick-like bug" myself, and have been trying to find out what it is. The bug I'm trying to ID (and I suspect this person is also trying to ID) looks more like a small, shiny black ladybug and attaches itself to your skin just like a tick does. It even makes the same "tik!" sound when you pluck it off your skin. It also itches terribly for many days, the same way tick bites do. But I know it can't be a tick, because it's very easy to squash between your fingers, something nobody can do with a tick. I'm fairly certain it's some kind of beetle. Next time I find one on myself, I'll be sure to take a picture of it before squishing it!

Do fleas burrow into human skin?

No, they bite and inject saliva, which temporarily reduces your blood's ability to clot (this also causes the itching of a flea bite). Then their mouthparts are used to drink the blood. While the mouthparts may enter the wound slightly, the flea as a whole does not "enter" the host, nor does it leave any parts behind when it stops feeding.
