When and why did the English become the British?
The simple is: They didn't! Great Britain is a union of states; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, in much the same way as the United States of America. The English come from England, The Scots from Scotland, the Welsh from Wales and the Irish from Northern Ireland. Collectively they are 'British' The simple analogy would be, "When and why did the Texans become American?"
I agree with the previous . I am from Scotland, which makes me Scottish, but Scotland is part of the UNITED KINGDOM of GREAT BRITAIN and NORTHERN IRELAND so I am British as well and happy to be so. There is nothing that Americans do that upsets Scots and some English people as when Americans call Britain England, why do they do this ? A craxy number of Americans seem to think that they are Irish or Scots so why do they call the Britain England? Another tip for American tourists, do what Harrison Ford did and go to Wales, it is a beautiful country and not like anywhere else.
Apparrently it was all 'England' at one time, it was the generic term for Britain until the natives objected. I think this was in the 1930s. It was accepted usage. I am English, I live in England & my country is the UK. These islands are the British Isles which make up Great Britain. I think that the people that did the objecting to the term 'England' were the Scottish Nationalists, if I remember my QI from Stepen Fry correctly...
Sorry, but NOPE, it was never " all 'England' " at any time, England was only used as a generic term for Britain by the English, (and still is by the majority of English to this day), if you ask non-English residents of the U.K. if the terms are synonymous you will get a resounding "NO!" from 99.999% of them, and might even come to some physical harm!.
The fact that people here in the United States call Britain "England" stems from the lack of education in Geography, not because they are stupid, unfortunately most people learn from television, and most of the talking heads don't know any better, though it is hard to excuse it when historians, economists and political experts make the same mistake, I've lost count of how many times I've heard how the U.K. referred to as England in serious documentaries.
Now this may seem pretty petty to most Americans reading this, but imagine if you were constantly called Californians, (Californians may think of themselves being called Texans), and hearing Californians and foreign people referring to how the Californian Army helped defeat Hitler, while the Californian Navy fought the Japanese after California was bombed at Pearl Harbor, how the Californians put a man on the moon, and on and on, you're probably mildly amused at this point thinking about it, but imagine it day in and day out, especially if you were in your own home state, and someone called you a Californian!!.... I guarantee you would tell them in no uncertain terms "I'm not ****ing Californian!!!"
Well, in Germany, it's also not very fixed. Most of the time we're saying "England" if we mean the UK but know it's not exactly the same. It's just very common and also there's no good equivalent to "UK" in German. Hardly anybody would say "Das Vereinigte Königreich", also "Großbritannian"= Great Britain isn't really fitting since it excludes Northern Ireland.
We tend to say "Briten" or "britisch" if we want to stress differences between British and Americans though. But except for that "Briten" sounds a bit too political correct in most ears :D

He was replaced by Winston Churchill, who was in office until the end of the war in Europe in 1945 at the head of a Coalition Government. He was replaced in the General Election of May '45 by Clement Attlee, a Labour Prime Minister who was in office when the war ended against Japan.

Winston Churchill during WW2. But maybe the slogan 'Cheer Winston:Vote Labour' said a great deal at the time, (1945) Winston was popular because of his great leadership during the war rather than his party political attributes.
