What is the use of ultrasound imaging to create a detailed visual image of the brain?

Neurosonography is a small, specialized section of ultrasound, frequently used in the NICU on premature babies. Images of the brain are able to be produced on premature and young babies due to the skull not being fully fused together yet, therefore allowing the ultrasound beam to reach the brain tissue. Neurosonography is also used before the baby is born, and still in the mother's womb. Once the skull has fused, transcranial ultrasound is still possible to an extent, through very small openings within and around the skull. This area of ultrasound is frequently used in high risk pediatric and specialty hospitals, such as St. Jude Children's research hospital. Using ultrasound on the brain of a fully fused skull is more challenging because an ultrasound beam cannot penetrate through bone. However, with skill and knowledge, it is possible to obtain brain images.

Which is the date of conception on an ultrasound?

No. Gestational age is measured from the woman's last period. Even if she doesn't know when this was, the gestational age is time from conception plus 2 weeks. For example, a 'gaedd 19 weeks' will give you a due date 21 weeks in the future. You are 17(+ 1 day) weeks from conception. 19(+ 1 day) weeks from your notional last period and 21 (- 1 day) weeks until your EDD.

How do ultrasound waves break up kidney stones?

A machine called a lithotripter is used to crush the kidney stone. The procedure is performed by a urologist on an outpatient basis and anesthesia is used. In shock wave lithotripsy, the person lies on a table or, less commonly, in a tub of water above the lithotripter. The lithotripter generates shock waves that pass through the person’s body to break the kidney stone into smaller pieces to pass more readily through the urinary tract.

Can you determine paternity by dates?

Full term gestation of a fetus ranges from 38 to 42 weeks. Doctors primarily suggest 40 weeks in the EDD (estimated date of delivery), but a woman, especially first time mothers, can go into labor two weeks early or two weeks late of her EDD. However, if a woman appears that she will not go into labor after more than 42 weeks, or if the baby is already getting too large earlier than 40 weeks, the doctor will induce labor. That is the number they shoot for.

In any case, the best way to confirm paternity is a DNA test post-partum.

At 5 weeks pregnant no fetal sac found on ultrasound heavy bleeding no cramping no clots. What does this mean?

Hi there, i'd definitely go to your GP or phone the hospital or midwife, they'll need to take a scan to see whats wrong, it could be a miscarriage or it could just be bleeding for no other reason. I had heavy bleeding at around 10 weeks and thought the worst so when i got an appointment at the hospital the following day to get an ultrasound you could imagine my amazement to see the baby there with a heartbeat, i was so relieved. I was told after my scan it was a clot and posed no serious threat and would probably disappear on its own. So good luck and get yourself down to that hospital or GP!!!
