What is a geared turbofan jet engine?
Geared turbofans have planetary reduction gearboxes to allow the fan (which pulls the airplane through the sky) will run slower than the compressor shaft. This does two things for you. It lets the shaft turn faster, and more efficiently, than the fan can safely turn, and it increases the horsepower available to the fan. Say you have a shaft that produces 1000 horsepower at 100,000 rpm. If you turn a three-foot-diameter fan 100,000 RPM it will explode like a grenade. Installing a 10:1 reduction gear will allow the fan to run at 10,000 RPM but it will have 10,000 horsepower. (Every time the compressor shaft turns it puts out 1000hp; if it turns 10 times to make the fan turn once, it puts 10,000hp out.)

I literally just signed for my USAF bonus, so this is the deal.
You'll raise your hand, get the Officer to sign your paperwork, then return it to MPF. MPF will then have you walk over to finance (or they'll do it for you), and show your paperwork. This should be the AF 901 that your CC signed for you to get your actual reenlistment paperwork signed by your officer administering the oath. From the day you turn in your paperwork, about a week will go by while AFPC confirms you reenlisted, then the finance system will receive you are entitled a bonus and how much is taxed. Then, you'll go back to the finance office, sign your SRB payout slip and about 7 - 8 business days from then you'll see the money in your account. I was taxed exactly 31%. You'll be taxed the same.
Base pay: $2907, Zone C multiplier of 6, 5 year reenlistment = $87210
After 31% taken off for taxes, then dived by 2 for up front bonus = $30087
That is the process. Sounds worse than it is... but it's the waiting for you bonus to drop that's the most agonizing. Good luck!
