If you received money from a sibling after he refinanced his home to pay off the share of an estate entitled to you are taxes owed on this money?

It sounds like what you received was your portion of an inheritance. If that is the situation, based on the facts given, there is no reportable tax occurrence. For inheritances, if what is inherited would have been taxable to the deceased, an IRA for example, then it's taxable to the heirs.

Ans

Money is fungible...that is indeterminable from each other. How your brother got the money to pay you is irrelevant. He didn't pay you....the estate did. The payment from the estate is not taxable to you...estate taxes are paid by the estate.

What are the fraternities and the sororities for the air force academy?

There are no Greek organizations at the Air Force Academy.

The Cadet Wing is broken down into 40 Cadet Squadrons, each of about 100 cadets. These squadrons effectively take the place of fraternities and sororities, as you will live in your squadron's area of the dorms and will develop close bonds with them through inter-squadron competitions and other activities.

One major difference is that squadrons are randomly assigned. The only situation in which a cadet may choose his/her squadron is through the legacy program, which allows cadets who have had close relatives graduate from the Academy go into the same squadron as their relative had been.

How many levels is there in security clearance in the government?

There are two kinds of clearance: Secret and Top Secret. There used to also be a Confidential clearance, but they finally figured out Confidential and Secret clearances require the exact same investigation so now it's just Secret and TS.

Now here's where it gets fun: Compartmented Information. Compartmentalization is the process of separating out information and granting clearances only to trustworthy people who need to work with that information. Maybe there is the need for intelligence on bacon. We'll call it BACINT. And OMG if our ultra secret BACINT got into the enemy's hands it would cause grave and irreparable damage to the nation's security. So they create a compartment for BACINT and call it GRANITE. Now, any time you report BACINT (say, to report that Smithfield Ham Shop in Smithfield, NC, has some really tasty bacon) you have to write SECRET GRANITE on it, and the computer that processes all the reports will know to only send SECRET GRANITE reports to authorized BACINT consumers.

Chanute Air Force Base Rantoul Illinois?

Was closed in 1993 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.

The base has since been designated by the EPA as a Priority SuperFund toxic waste site, following excavation of test pits which identified volatile organic compounds, SVOCs, dioxins and furans, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, and metals detected in the soil, ground water, and leachate in hidden, undocumented landfills there dating back to WWII. Record levels of cancer and birth defects in the local population have led some to nickname it "The Love Canal of the Midwest" and "Chanute Air Force Waste".

If you graduated from the US Air Force Academy do you count your years of service from when you graduated or from when you enrolled?

You time at the Academy does not count for pay and retirement purposes. It all starts from graduation date, unless you were enlisted in the military before enrolling at the academy, then your enlisted time would be addes to the time after graduation.

Is Kadena AB better than Aviano?

I spent a year and 1/2 on Kadena AB. I loved it. There is so much to see and do. If you let yourself understand the people and the culture it is worth your time. But Aviano offers different opportunities. You are about 2 hrs away from Venice and only a short distance from several European countries let alone seeing all of the history of Italy So I guess it's a draw. I would like to visit each one over and over.

What part of FICA does the employer pay?

Your employer is forced to pay 7.5% of your wages to Social Security (FICA). This is in addition to the 7.5% FICA deduction you see on your check stub.

As of the new law passed in Dec 2010:

The tax is payable on the first $106,800 of earnings. Earning are defined slightly differently for this than what is used for withholding, (or other things). Additionally, a portion of what was a total of 15.3% tax equally paid between employer & employee - or entirely by self employed (half employer paid, half employee), is dedicated to Medicare and has no maximum earnings limit.

HOWEVER:

Under current law, employees pay a 6.2% Social Security tax on all wages earned up to $106,800 (in 2011) and self-employed individuals pay 12.4% Social Security self-employment taxes on all their self-employment income up to the same threshold.

For 2011, the Senate passed 2010 Tax Reform Act gives a two-percentage-point payroll/self-employment tax holiday for employees and self-employeds. As a result, employees will pay only 4.2% Social Security tax on wages and self-employment individuals will pay only 10.4% Social Security self-employment taxes on self-employment income up to the threshold.

The maximum savings for 2011 will be $2,136 (2% of $106,800).

The amount paid by the employer will not change and will be that same 2% more than the employee.
